The Courts

+ - Court convicts Skype for breaching GPL

Submitted by terber
terber (599156) writes "In Munich a German court once again upheld the GPL2 and convicted Skype (based in Luxembourg) of violating GPL by selling the Linux-based VoIP phone "SMCWSKP 100" without proper source code access. Skype later on added a flyer to the phones with an URL where to obtain the sources, but the court found this insufficient as this was in breach of GPL section 3. Plaintiff was once again Netfilter developer Harald Welte, who runs http://gpl-violations.org/. The decision is currently only available in German at http://www.ifross.de./ News source (German): www.golem.de/0707/53684.html"

+ - HP lying about Mac OS X support->

znerd writes "After struggling for months to get the HP Business Inkjet 2800dtn working properly with Mac OS X 10.4, I contacted HP support. I told them the printer is extremely slow and fails to properly print moderately complex images. Result: They told me they know the 2800 does not work well with Mac OS X. Switch to Windows or get your money back. I'm baffled. I explicitly checked for Mac-compatibility when I bought the printer.
However, the HP website still states that the printer is supported. Do HP consider Mac OS X users relevant? And isn't this sort of thing illegal anyway, proclaiming something you know you can't/won't offer?"

Vista Can Run Without Activation for a Year 357

An anonymous reader gave us a heads up on this article for people who like putting things off. It begins: "Windows Vista can be run for at least a year without being activated, a serious end-run around one of Microsoft's key anti-piracy measures, Windows expert Brian Livingston said today. Livingston, who publishes the Windows Secrets newsletter, said that a single change to Vista's registry lets users put off the operating system's product activation requirement an additional eight times beyond the three disclosed last month. With more research, said Livingston, it may even be possible to find a way to postpone activation indefinitely."

+ - Generating hifi graphics: which language/libs?

znerd writes "For an internet site, I need to develop an off-line graphics generator. Since it's off-line, there is not much of a performance-challenge, but quality is; the generated graphics must look absolutely slick. Among my requirements are GIF/JPEG/PNG generation, alpha blending and soft shadows. Generation of animated GIFs is a nice-to-have, but not a requirement. I have started evaluating both Java2D and Cocoa (Mac OS X, Objective C), and both seem acceptable, although Cocoa will probably give nicer results, considering the reputation of Apple's graphical interface.
Do you have experience with (high-volume) off-line generation of graphics? What technologies did you use and which recommendations can you make?"
