How Much Does a New Internet Cost?

Submitted by wschalle
wschalle writes "Given the recent flurry of articles concerning ISP over subscription, increasing bandwidth needs, and lack of infrastructure spending on the part of cable companies, I'm forced to wonder, what is the solution? How much would a properly upgraded internet backbone cost? How long would it take to make it happen? Will the cable companies step up before Verizon's FiOS becomes the face of broadband in America?"

Know Your Enemy: Malicious Web Servers->

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "HNS has a paper that examines client-side attacks and evaluates methods to defend against client-side attacks on web browsers. First, it provides an overview of client-side attacks and introduces the honeypot technology that allows security researchers to detect and examine these attacks. Then it proceeds to examine a number of cases in which malicious web servers on the Internet were identified with honeypot technology and evaluates different defense methods. It concludes with a set of recommendations that one can implement to make web browsing safer."

ZDNet : AMD Barcelona will be a disappointment->

Submitted by
crazyeyes
crazyeyes writes "George Ou of ZDNet has this to say about the performance of the AMD Barcelona :

I can tell you right now that 2.0 GHz Barcelona will be disappointing compared to Intel Clovertown 80 watt E5335 or the low-voltage 50 watt L5335 2.0 Processor. It will likely be a little slower even at the same clock speed at 2.0 GHz for SPECint_rate2006. It will dominate the two socket space for SPECfp_rate2006 and based on numbers they posted at the analyst conference, the Barcelona 2.0 GHz quad-core in a dual-socket configuration will even beat an Intel 3.0 GHz quad-core Clovertown dual-socket server.
Looks like AMD is in big trouble. Investors should be careful about a dip in stock prices when actual benchmark results are out."

Google Throws Lead Paint on Movie Download Market 6

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "As promised Google shut down its video store Wednesday — and its DRM made sure all movie files purchased from the store ceased to funtion. This has sparked a firestorm of negative commentary from the Digerati who see it as pure theft. Cory Doctorow called it "...a giant, flaming middle finger, sent by Google and the studios to the customers who were trusting (as in dumb) enough to buy DRM videos". John Dvorak called it "old bait-and-switch tactics" where vendors make promises, but build-in the ability to reneg on those promises if they choose to do so later. Both Dvorak and Doctorow call for the judicial system to step in, but MP3 Newswire says that the abuse to consumer trust will do more damage to the paid download market than anything the courts could inflict. "As a consumer, if you purchase a digital movie file online only to have it unexpectedly repossessed you will probably think twice before ever buying any such download again. If you do consider it again it certainly won't be for the same price as before. Experience made these downloads worth far less to you. So what are feature film downloads that can be revoked at any time worth in the market place? To some Google Video customers the value of a movie download dropped all the way down to zero.""

Slashdot is filtered in Iran !

Submitted by
Anonymous Coward
Anonymous Coward writes "It is a while that slashdot is filtered in Iran and other interesting and scientific sites are becoming banned one after another .People in Iran are used to see their favorite sites banned without any logical reason . It seems that a robot which is sensitive to specific words is used to control the passing traffic without any human supervision and there are no places to complain about or no one is going to be responsible about it. The main purpose of censorship was said to be stopping people's access to pornographic and political sites , The number of dedicated hosts in European countries are increased which are just used for VPN connections. In Iran, people simply know how to tunnel using softwares like VTUND and OpenVPN and where to buy VPN accounts . What they are doing is hiding their head under snow and claiming nothing's going on."

Pirate Bay founders defendhosting pedophilia site

Submitted by
Jared
Jared writes "Though disagree with its subject matter and opinions, they defend the site owner's freedom of speech. "I have read the material and personally I don't agree. They claim among other things that children can have voluntary love affairs with adults, and that is completely ridiculous. But I believe more in an open debate than in burying our heads in the sand. They have the right to say this," said Svartholm Warg, one of the founders of the Pirate Bay."

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "The NZPA is reporting that the New Zealand Ministry of Education has declined to renew a licensing deal for MS Office on 25,000 Macintosh computers in the countries schools. The Education Minister, Steve Maharey, has even gone to suggest schools use free alternative NeoOffice. However a school Principal has spoken out against the decision, claiming the NeoOffice website warned users to expect problems and bugs, saying: "That's not the sort of software we should be expecting kids in New Zealand to be using.""

Robotic Ecologies

Submitted by
Roland Piquepaille
Roland Piquepaille writes "The University of Virginia (UVA) School of Architecture has started a new program about 'robotic ecologies' which wants to answer the question: Will robots take over architecture? As said the program leader, 'This research is not just about architectural machines that move. It is about groups of architectural machines that move with intelligence.' Apparently, buildings tracking our movements and adapting their shape or texture according human presence are not far fetched. Maybe one day, we'll talk to our homes and they'll answer...
