Why ISPs' "Stand" Against Child Porn Is Actually Not a Stand Against Child Porn 283

TechDirt has an insightful article on the recent push for ISPs to turn off Usenet access under the guise of fighting child pornography. Unfortunately, the "stand against child porn" isn't actually a stand at all, it seems — more like ignoring the issue while trying to snag some headlines and good will. "Taking a stand against child porn wouldn't be overly aggressively blocking access to internet destinations that may or may not have porn (and there's no review over the list to make sure that they're actually objectionable). Taking a stand against child porn would be hunting down those responsible for the child porn and making sure that they're dealt with appropriately... Also, this sets an awful precedent in that the ISPs can point out that it's ok for them to block "objectionable" content where they get to define what's objectionable without any review."

Apple Climbs Into Third Place In U.S. PC Market 1019

Tibor the Hun writes "According to Gartner and IDC, Apple now has between 7.8 and 8.5% of market share. While those numbers are not astonishing, they are not insignificant, and their growth does not seem to be slowing down. Will the pearly gates of acceptance open up for them once they reach the magic 10%, and will that have a positive effect on desktop Linux adoption? Hard to tell, but it's good to see that normal people (not just us geeks) are choosing to go with a different OS, rather than staying with the headache-inducing Windows."

Jobs Says Flash Video Not Suitable for iPhone 387

Lev13than writes "Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs said the iPhone won't be using Adobe Systems' Inc.'s popular Flash media player any time soon, saying the technology doesn't meet his company's performance standards for video. Jobs said the version of Flash formatted to personal computers is too slow on the iPhone while the mobile version of the media player is "is not capable of being used with the web." The comments come a day before Apple is set to introduce the company's plan for iPhone SDK, the software developers kit which will allow third-party developers to create applications that can work in conjunction with the popular handheld device."

Google Goes to India

theodp writes "Fortune reports that life is good at Google India, where the search giant is replicating and perhaps even exceeding its Silicon Valley workplace indulgences. 'So many Googlers who are Indian want to move back to India and participate in India's growth,' said an exec in explaining why Bangalore was chosen for Google's first R&D center outside the U.S. Not only that, Google is counting on India's 'strong American English editing and writing skills' to meet its goal of making the country the customer-support center for the AdWords business in the U.S. and Britain. In fact, the majority of young hires in Google's Hyderabad office are actually drawn from liberal arts colleges rather than tech schools. Despite the absence of Chinese or Russians in its India offices, Google execs insist they needn't do anything explicit to promote diversity, unlike the U.S. where 'you live in a fairly segregated society.' Still, Google India may want to take a cue from the politically correct U.S. of A. and at least stop touting employees' amazing Hitler knowledge on its career pages."
