+ - Hollywood Breaches Copyright Too.

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "The SMH (Australia) reports that: "THE makers of Paul Hogan's most recent hit film are investigating whether it has been ripped off for a new Hollywood comedy starring Adam Sandler. The director and co-writer of Strange Bedfellows, Dean Murphy, is concerned about the similarities with I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which opens in the US this week." Can't wait to see the case for the defence."

J. Syd writes "Amateur (and unpublished) author wannabe with a unique way of "publishing" an action novel. The book is free to read online (and requires no registration) but is unfinished. The author requests donations (or purchase of exclusive "gear" and/or advertisements) to fund completion of the book. It is the open-source GPL version of the paperback novel."

+ - New Wing Commander Manual?!->

Submitted by
Bandit
Bandit writes "Remember the good old days of video game manuals being pretend spellbooks or spaceship operating manuals? Electronic Arts has gone an obscure extra mile and released a full 64-page 'continuity' manual for their upcoming XBLA shooter, Wing Commander Arena. It's a futuristic magazine done in an early-90s style, full of fake advertisements, fictional travel guides, pilot interviews and the like... suggesting that somebody out there remembers the good old days of Origin Systems! You can find it as a free PDF download here."

Harry Potter Leaked Via Handheld Camera 427

Posted by kdawson
from the too-big-a-perimeter-to-patrol dept.
owlgorithm writes "Salon reports that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been leaked four days before it hits bookstores. It turns out that someone with access to the American edition of the book has taken a photograph of every one of the pages and made them available via bittorrent. Publishers may well be quaking in their boots, but in some places the quality is barely legible. On many pages the pirateer's hands are in the pictures with other pages needing a bit of Photoshopping just to make out the words. It appears many of the sites have been removing the content, naturally enough."

+ - Democracy Player is dead, long live Miro->

Submitted by
MrSpin
MrSpin writes "Democracy Player has relaunched today as Miro. Developed by the Participatory Culture Foundation, Miro aims to make online video "as easy as watching TV", while at the same time ensuring that the new medium remains accessible to everyone, through its support for open standards. The open-source application combines a media player and library, content guide, video search engine, as well as podcast and BitTorrent clients. But why the name change? According to last100, who have published a full review and guide to Miro: "When Democracy Player launched back in February 2006, the feedback received was that the name evoked different, yet equally negative responses. For many Americans it conjured up an image of yet another left wing media project, and to the rest of the world it was, rather bizarrely, being associated with the policies of the Bush administration. In contrast, the new name is purposely abstract.""
