Microsoft

+ - Don't save XP!

Submitted by wakejagr
wakejagr writes "While many people are asking Microsoft to save Windows XP, a few are asking Microsoft not to save Windows XP. Just think of all the cool things that could happen if there is no viable Microsoft operating system: a real market share for Linux and Macintosh, more business support for Free / open source projects, and a greater general population understanding that there are other options out there, just to name a few. Will Microsoft really do this, and shoot itself in the foot?"
It's funny. Laugh.

According to Novell CTO Jeff Jaffe, "software patent system reform is necessary to promote software innovation going forward," so Novell will contribute "significant resources" to the EFF Patent Busting campaign which is already underway."
Debian

+ - Is Ubuntu all wrong?

Submitted by
wakejagr
wakejagr writes "Here's a rant that claims Ubuntu is not revolutionary enough. According to the article, there are problems with the Desktop Environment: Gnome and KDE are both bad because they are too old and lack one overarching "control panel", consistancy in the look of applications, speed, and stability. There are also problems with the package manager: the graphical front end to the apt/dpkg system is sub-par. Most damning of all is the fact that new users are forced to move away from the programs they are used to using (on Windows). Linux, and Ubuntu in particular, will be ready to challange MS after someone comes along to "raise the bar and sink some cash in to Wine so that MS Office (All versions) and Photoshop (All versions) will run on Linux as if they were native Linux apps." While it is refreshing to see someone not claiming that this is the year of Linux on the desktop, are things really this bad?"
