Comment Re:I wonder... liar, liar, pants on fire? (Score 1) 127 127

Did anyone else besides this blogger of unknown repute receive this alleged e-mail notice? I didn't. I requested the same e-mail updates as he allegedly did, yet I've received nothing at all. The only explanation I can conjecture is that HP's SMTP servers are dragging the process out for who knows how many hours or days.

Got it too... Announcement is legit.... Sorry.... V

Iris-Scan ID Cards For Children In Mexico 114 114

An anonymous reader writes "Today the first ID cards that include iris and fingerprint biometric information were registered and issued in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. (Original article in Spanish.) The juicier part of the story is that for now, only children will be enrolled in this national biometric database. It is intended that by December 2012 all children in the country will be registered. The alleged purpose of the new ID card is to hinder the abduction of children and prevent child exploitation. The first ID cards are being issued in the same city that last year started implementing a mandatory iris scan for convicted felons and voluntary members of the public in a Minority Reportesque plan to combat delinquency that features iris readers in public transport and ATMs. This comes from the country that last year attempted and failed to create a national database of mobile phone users, again with the purported intention to tackle extortion and kidnappings."

Son Sues Mother Over Facebook Posts 428 428

Most kids hate having their parents join in on a discussion on Facebook, but one 16-year-old in Arkansas hates it so much he has filed suit against his mother, charging her with harassment. From the article: "An Arkadelphia mother is charged with harassment for making entries on her son's Facebook page. Denise New's 16-year-old son filed charges against her last month and requested a no-contact order after he claims she posted slanderous entries about him on the social networking site. New says she was just trying to monitor what he was posting." Seems like he could just unfriend her.

After +200 replies, my post will probably be redundant, I will add my vote to the probably many coming for getting a budget pro-audio card. M-Audio, from the Audiophile to some other Firewire/USB products they have should do... if you are really on a budget, try Behringer... word to the wise, ***performance*** wise, they cannot be beat for the price; however, they are ***built*** kind of cheaply...

IDEs With VIM Text Editing Capability? 193 193

An anonymous reader writes "I am currently looking to move from text editing with vim to a full fledged IDE with gdb integration, integrated command line, etc. Extending VIM with these capabilities is a mortal sin, so I am looking for a linux based GUI IDE. I do not want to give up the efficient text editing capabilities of VIM though. How do I have my cake and eat it too?"

Survey Says C Dominated New '08 Open-Source Projects 378 378

svonkie writes "C overwhelmingly proved to be the most popular programming language for thousands of new open-source projects in 2008, reports The Register (UK). According to license tracker Black Duck Software, which monitors 180,000 projects on nearly 4,000 sites, almost half — 47 per cent — of new projects last year used C. 17,000 new open-source projects were created in total. Next in popularity after C came Java, with 28 per cent. In scripting, JavaScript came out on top with 20 per cent, followed by Perl with 18 per cent. PHP attracted just 11 per cent, and Ruby six per cent. The numbers are a surprise, as open-source PHP has proved popular as a web-site development language, while Ruby's been a hot topic for many."

Barack Obama Wins US Presidency 3709 3709

Last night, around 11pm, all the major networks announced that Senator Barack Obama had won the election. Soon after, Senator McCain conceded. There were no crazy partisan court hearings, just a simple election. This is your chance to talk about it and what it means for the future of our nation.

vmartell writes: The 2008 World Chess Championship in Bonn is currently in progress. As things stand right now, the Champion, Vishy Anand is ahead of the challenger and former Champion, Vladimir Kramnik, 2-1. URL: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=4963 — Things are getting exciting now, with the fighting chess of game 3 and the revelation that Vishy has Magnus Carlsen as his second. To connect with the IT world, there is also an interview with Kramnik where the role of computers in preparation is extensively discussed: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=4950 Additionally, as a suggestion to the kind editors, maybe if Chess qualifies as "News for Nerds" the addition of a chess category/topic would be great.

Submission + - 16th World Computer Chess Championship in progress->

vmartell writes: The 16th World Computer Chess Championship is now in progress in Beijing as part of the Computer Games Championship! Currently in the lead are Rybka 3.0, recognized as the world's strongest chess engine and Hiarcs, another commercial engine. Another curiosity is a Java ME based engine running on a Nokia phone, which BTW is currently being trounced by the other engines. A very interesting sideline: before the computer tournament a Women Grandmaster played two games against Rybka; the result? Rybka won both games!
