Lightspark is an open source Adobe Flash imple men ta tion, designed from the ground up to be effi cient on cur rent and (hope fully) future hardware.

+ - Jobs rejects runRev after formerly encouraging it->

Submitted by virgilp
virgilp (1774784) writes "From the article

In response to a question in a recent Apple shareholder’s meeting, Jobs said that a HyperCard-like product for the iPad would be a good idea “though someone would have to build it”.
....
In order to support our active and growing revMobile customer base, we submitted an in-depth proposal to Apple that we create an iPhone-only product that uses native Cocoa objects, supports 100% of their API, works perfectly with multitasking and battery life, but uses a variant of the revTalk language to use these objects and APIs, and then translates those into native code. While a significant engineering departure for us from the current revMobile path, this solution would have resulted in perfect-quality iPhone-only applications
....
Steve Jobs has now rejected our proposal and made it clear that he has no interest in having revMobile available on the iPhone or iPad in any form.

+ - Developer gets money back from Apple->

Submitted by virgilp
virgilp (1774784) writes "From the article:

Update: After following up the response I received from Apple with:
"Thanks for your reply. I'm sure you understand that what you have said is not legal. You cannot vary the terms of a contract and just keep my money — the law is very clear on this.
I have now placed the transaction into dispute with my card issuer, and they will issue the charge-back to you shortly.
All the best with your toxic practices in the future."

I have now received this in reply:

"Hello Jodie
We are pleased make an exception to our no refund/no exchanges terms of purchase and have processed a refund for your iPhone Developer Program order.
Although we have processed your refund immediately, we request that you please allow 7-10 business days to post the transaction to your cardholder account.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please let me know.

Regards,

iPhone Developer Program"

+ - iPad Usability: First Findings From User Testing->

Submitted by virgilp
virgilp (1774784) writes "An interesting read — Jakob Nielsen's iPad Usability: First Findings From User Testing.
(Spoiler: it's not as good as Steve would want you to believe. Reading the summary felt like grossly exaggerated critics — so I won't post it here. But if you get past the summary and read on, you'll see that it's a rather serious study)."

+ - Does Apple have a monopoly?->

Submitted by virgilp
virgilp (1774784) writes "According to some people, Apple can do whatever they want with their SDK license agreement because they are "a small player" at only 5% of the market.
But data from Gartner shows that Apple has 99.4% of the mobile application distribution market. And since the SDK is all about making mobile applications, not phones...."

+ - Developer shows the realities of HTML5 on iPad->

Submitted by virgilp
virgilp (1774784) writes "Some random guy actually experiments with HTML5 on iPad... .this is how Steve Jobs wants users to create cross-platform applications and games. Go figure.... it is even supported to work TODAY,
Also, watch his demo on the Nexus one, it actually performs better. This is in line with my own observations when playing with the iPad and Nexus one (on http://www.chromeexperiments.com) — I was actually surprised that no major news site seem to have noticed the big performance issues on the iPad (despite its — theoretically — more powerful processor)"

+ - 5 reasons you should be scared of Apple->

Submitted by virgilp
virgilp (1774784) writes "This article summarizes 5 reasons why you should be scared of Apple's growing influence. While some of the things they say may be questionable.... the truth is that Apple doesn't exactly have a track record of "doing the best for the customers, not for themselves" (e,g, the silent install of Safari with the iTunes update... just to name one). Particularly interesting is this patent (from Steve Jobs himself) showing how they may make iAds work, in the future:

Apple can further determine whether a user pays attention to the advertisement. The determination can include performing, while the advertisement is presented, an operation that urges the user to respond; and detecting whether the user responds to the performed operation. If the response is inappropriate or nonexistent, the system will go into lock down mode in some form or other until the user complies. In the case of an iPod, the sound could be disconnected rendering it useless until compliance is met. For the iPhone, no calls will be able to be made or received.
