I'd love to see the pictures of the folks doing the smashing: 1. The motive: futility; 2. The preparation: anticipation; 3. The action: thrill; 4. The aftermath: that was...uh...fun...let's have a doughnut.
But it helps to know where the constraints are. One would hope the hosting service would be so kind as to help their clients out of such a 'positive' situation.

Honestly, though, what can you do? Sure, you could put open source stuff in place of windows, but the business functionality just isn't there. The real trade-offs of business vs. security are vexing and not easy.
What better tool to subjugate your targets than to pose as "one of them" by emulating their imperfection. Humans, after all, are most resilient and innovative when facing crisis. Imperfection is perhaps a great weapon.
