Climate, Habitat Threaten Wild Coffee Species 274

An anonymous reader writes "BBC reports that Dr. Aaron Davis of the Royal Botanical Gardens claims 'almost three-quarters of the world's wild coffee species are threatened, as a result of habitat loss and climate change. "Conserving the genetic diversity within this genus has implications for the sustainability of our daily cup, particularly as coffee plantations are highly susceptible to climate change.'"

Create a kid-friendly zone. Yeah, I realize its "War"craft, and I understand that for myself, but its also a visually beautiful game with some incredible game mechanics. While I typically play after the kids have gone to bed (ie casual gamer), they're not dumb and get curious. I've found some slightly safer non-aggro areas and let them run around and play with the Hunter and his pets (son loves my Dino pet, especially with Eyes of the Beast) or priest (daughter loves how her magic is so shiny). They love to sit around and make characters. So many of the kids games are boring to them and don't have this kind of freedom.

I'd love to see a server or even a small zone that lets you run around, not worry about being attacked so they could play around with it. Maybe put a few bucks into marketing to eliminate me feeling like bad father when my daughter mentions to mommy that she plays the "war" game. I'd pay the fee easily every month just for them so they can share some of the fun without the scary stuff.

Wonder if I could get enough support to change the name to "World of Non-violent Happytime MindCraft?" Yeah, sure that'd fly.

So... the soon to be ex-president managed to fark things up sooo completely, Obama won't be able to fix it immediately. Why is that a poor reflection on him?

At least with Obama I figure we're less likely to end up with another laundry list of "Ha ha, I farked your country" items at the next election.

Mimicking Electric Eel Cells 71

An anonymous reader writes "A team of US researchers has asked the following question in the new field of systems biology: 'Do we understand how a cell produces electricity well enough to design one, and to optimize that design?' They believe it should be possible to build artificial cells replicating the electrical behavior of electric eel cells. In fact, such artificial cells could deliver better performance — as much as 40% more energy than real eel cells, a computer model suggests. They could be used to power medical implants and other small devices."
