People of Lava Scandinavia Android TV hands on 1

Submitted by teh bigz
teh bigz writes "Little-known Swedish television manufacturer People of Lava is the first company to demonstrate a fully-interactive internet TV running Google’s Android operating system. We visited the company’s headquarters to get some hands-on time with a very early prototype of its upcoming Scandinavia Google TV, which is the most convincing example that we’ve seen of what "the future of TV" might look like."

The (LAN)Party is over for DFI->

Submitted by
Richard Swinburne
Richard Swinburne writes "If you've been interested in building PCs and overclocking for more than a few years, the name LANParty probably means a great deal to you. In the early 2000s, LANParty was the archetypal range of overclocking motherboards with eye-catching visual design, unique features and powerful, flexible BIOS controls.

You've probably also noticed that new LANParty boards have become rarer and rarer, and over the last few months, we've been trying to find out exactly what's happening to one of the most famous PC enthusiast brands.

That said, we wanted answers, and so I decided to make a visit to DFI's head office in Taiwan. It's often easier to find the right person to talk to with a visit than on the phone — and you're also a little harder to ignore because you're standing there. Or so I thought."

Nvidia reveals plans to make x86 CPU->

Submitted by
arcticstoat
arcticstoat writes "Nvidia has revealed that it plans to enter the x86 processor market in the next two to three years, according to the company's senior vice president of investor relations and communications, Michael Hara. At the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco yesterday, Hara was asked when Nvidia would want or need to get into the general purpose microprocessor business. Hara replied that 'the question is not so much I think if; I think the question is when.' Hara explained that it made sense to make the company's current Tegra platform with an integrated ARM CPU because of the market requirements, and said that 'someday it's going to make sense to take the same approach in the x86 market as well.'

However, Hara also pointed out that Nvidia's x86 CPU wouldn't be appropriate for every segment of the market, and would be mainly targeted at smaller system-on-chip platforms. Although Hara didn't reveal a specific timeframe for the new CPU, he said that 'two or three years down the road I think it's going to make sense,' and said that 'we won't talk much more about what we think about that timeframe, but there's no question it's on our minds.' The main issue here, of course, is that Nvidia doesn't have a license from Intel to make its own x86 processors."

Asus embeds Linux on motherboard

Submitted by
bigzeh
bigzeh writes "Reviews of boards based on Intel's X38 chipset are starting to appear on the web. It looks as if Asus have decided to embed a Linux distro on their flagship P5E3 Deluxe motherboard. Although it's not up to much more than basic web browsing and Skype calling at the moment, you would hope that Asus will either let the community create their own third party apps for the distro, or add new features to it over time. Lets hope it's the former!"

Intel's X38 chipset goes under the spotlight

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "Later this month, Intel will release their next-gen X38 chipset which is targeted at enthusiasts — it's the long awaited update to Intel's ageing 975X chipset. The guys at Bit-Tech have had an early look at an engineering sample X38 board from Gigabyte. Early performance numbers look promising and the board's power consumption was surprisingly low compared to the competition. From the article: "The chipset, like its predecessor, is CrossFire capable, but we're not 100 percent sure on SLI support yet — the common consensus is no and that's what Nvidia has told us, but there have been rumours to suggest that it might support it. We can't see why Nvidia would want to allow it given that its competing chipset with dual x16 PCI-Express 2.0 is just a couple of months away.""

Overclocking Intel's Core 2 Quad Q6600

Submitted by
Tim Smalley
Tim Smalley writes "Bit-Tech has taken Intel's Core 2 Quad Q6600 for a spin on two motherboards to find out if it could be the next Athlon XP 2500+ in the eyes of overclockers. From the article: "What's clear from our experiences is that the Core 2 Quad Q6600 seems to be that new "bang for buck" processor that, with a little bit of overclocking, is going to net you performance that is going to at least match the Core 2 Extreme QX6850, if not surpass it by some margin.""

Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital Edition reviewed

Submitted by
Might E. Mouse
Might E. Mouse writes "Matrox has made some refinements to the original TripleHead2Go and has released a digital version of the device. Bit-Tech has a review of the TripleHead2Go Digital Edition up today and on the whole it fares pretty well, but like the older version there are still some drawbacks. From the article: "On the whole, I am very impressed with the TripleHead2Go but there are some definite drawbacks that you might want to consider before taking the plunge. Not every game is supported and you can't guarantee that games you're wanting to play in the future will have support for the super-wide resolutions that the TripleHead2Go can handle.""

HD DVD shrugs off Blockbuster Blu-ray expansion

Submitted by
Might E. Mouse
Might E. Mouse writes "Earlier this week, Blockbuster video announced that it was going to expand its line of Blu-ray titles into another 1450 stores in America. At an event in London yesterday, Ken Graffeo, a representative from Universal Studios and the HD DVD Promotional Group, shrugged this off as an insignificant event in the format wars, as rental only accounts for 1% of its revenue."
