The biggest issue I see with Google is that they like to tease the waters with these services, things like the recently retired Google Reader, they will put it out there, decide that they are not getting enough interest and then retire it. Google needs to look at what they do and keep doing it well, not trying to target every aspect of the market. Personally I would FAR prefer to put my data into Evernote, as I know they will hang around, Google Keep... meh we will see how long until it goes. The things google innovate on, THEY hang around, the things that Google follow on... tend to get flushed after a while. Just my 2c.

Comment: Must it be hosted locally (Score 1) 4

Hi Adumonit,
Do you specifically have a need to host it locally? I live in Australia and like you server hosting costs here are *prohibitive*. Hence I do all my hosting in the United States where you can rent servers from any number of providers for $60USD a month and up, they manage all the hardware and stuff for you (and depending on how much you are willing to pay a month) can even manage the software for you as well (to a certain degree).

The large benefit of this is that you wouldn't have a massive initial outlay for hardware costs and the great thing is you can start out small and if you need to in 12 months time move to larger hardware to support the growth.

As I said this only depends on if you actually have a specific business need to host locally.

As far as how to install all those, I personally am a fan of cPanel, in theory it might be overkill for what you are looking for but you can usually get it on rented dedicated servers and it will happily handle the install of apache, php, (python can be added easily) and myqsl. The massive benefit here would be it will also manage *upgrades* to those packages minimising admin work while you are starting up.

When you kick off and have enough resources to warrant it then you could move to a custom managed/tuned install of each so that you can optimise them.

Just my thoughts. Stuart

+ - Has Startup "Collusion" bridged that final frontier between paper and iPad?->

technicalnotebook writes "As something most slashdotters will know that final frontier between paper and iPad really has never been crossed. However after seeing it pop up in quite a number of places in the last 24 hours, Collusion seems like perhaps it might just have cracked this for us once and for all.

In short, Collusion is a mix of a battery operated pen, hardware dongle and custom app to enable real time handwriting and collaboration using what you could essentially see as a digital pen and paper. We have all seen the capacitive pen's for the iPad and know that precision is one of the major downfalls however is it possible that this has finally been overcome? My question for slashdotters, do you think this could be the game changer for finally getting closer to a paperless office or will that always be a pipe dream? For those that are interested Collusion has an open Kickstarter Project and in 5 days have almost reached their goal, you can check it out at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/553362111/collusion-ipad-pen-productivity-solved"

+ - Web Server OS choice & config advice for start-up with limited resources 4

Submitted by adumonit
adumonit writes "I am an intermediate programmer starting up a web-related service on very limited funds and in a developing economy. All things internet(hosting and support services) are still overpriced in our end of the world.

Fortunately, I have enough funds to buy server hardware(1 box) to host my application(locally) and to subscribe for hosting services for at least a year whilst I grow the start-up and see how well it will fare. Would you believe, it costs about $1000 to have them host MY own server?!... Anyways,I have done my research and decided I will need MySQL as a DB, PHP(which I am comfortable in) to prototype my idea and Python for the final application, all on Apache [please advise if this would be a pitfall]. I know CentOS is a possible Linux disto option as I have seen it is quite popular.

How best can I install and configure everything (DB, application) securely on one server with a plan for scaling in the future? Any pointers on where I can start to find info for this will be most helpful."

Submitted by technicalnotebook
technicalnotebook writes "OK Slashdotters, I have a question that so far the interwebs has been unable to answer. I use a mac (whole iOS environment as well when I am mobile).

To cut a long story short, I would like to be able to either
a) copy and paste text into a text editor of some sort encrypt it (in at least a relatively strong algorithm) and then copy and paste it back (into a web browser) for storage on the web or
b) in my web browser (or any other program) select a block of text, right click --> encrypt, enter password to encrypt with and voila it is done.

I used to be able to do this back in the day with PGP Desktop on my Windows machine (which worked well). I would ideally like something to do the same.

Something using GnuPG would be awesome I have had a look but so far have only been able to find things that integrate with say Email or the like.

IOS decryption ability would be awesome (but not required, and I am aware this would require a copy paste).

Hoping the collective awesomeness of the Slashdot community can help.

Interestingly it looks like (for once) us Aussies were the first to get this, about 6(ish) months ago Foxtel started broadcasting via streaming channels to the XBox 360. I will admit it is not a full featured service but it is a really good start. I will be curious to see how it plays out overseas to see if you get full featured (such as pausing, recording etc) as of course there are technical limitations that have to be overcome there. Stuart

technicalnotebook writes "KSplice announces this morning that they have been wholly acquired by Oracle. In theory this is a good thing correct? However for those of you who have ever thought about using KSplice for rebootless kernel updates read below. KSplice will no longer be taking new customers for its services.

We are very pleased to announce that Oracle has completed the acquisition of Ksplice today, and we are now a wholly owned subsidiary of Oracle.

Along with this news, we want to reiterate our commitment to customer satisfaction and our intention to communicate with you regularly during the integration process. All of your existing relationships with Ksplice remain the same. Ksplice’s management and its highly-regarded team of engineers bring significant domain expertise to Oracle.

The Ksplice Uptrack service is planned to be included as a standard part of Oracle Linux Premier Support, and we will no longer be selling the service separately to new customers moving forward. As an existing Ksplice customer, you may continue to renew your subscriptions and add additional systems to your account as before, however we need to make a couple of changes:
Starting on September 1, 2011, credit cards will be the only accepted method of payment, as we will no longer be able to accept payment through PayPal or checks. We ask that you please update your credit card information with Ksplice through the Uptrack web interface.
We will be requiring all Ksplice customers to agree to a revised Ksplice Uptrack Subscription Agreement before September 1, 2011. Please review the revised Agreement through the Uptrack web interface and accept the terms to continue use of the service.

When the GPU Crashes, ensure you can still turn your caps lock on and off (this will confirm it is a GPU crash and not a full system crash)
2. If you can turn the caps lock on and off, press the power button once on your Mac Book Pro (do not hold it down, just press it once).
3. Wait for the system to hibernate/sleep etc Once the system has powered off, press the power button again
4. Wait for the system to start back up again Disconnect an external display if you have one now, or reconnect it if you do not, then the graphics should come back on

Why does this work???? NFI I am new to the Mac Platform so will not even try to explain it. I have only used this to reset the GPU after a crash overnight but I am guessing it will work if you have a GPU crash during normal work as well."

+ - Registrars Hoarding Expired Domain Names->

Submitted by technicalnotebook
technicalnotebook writes "After recently trying to snap up a domain name I have been wanting for some time, I have discovered some interesting clashes in policies between registrars and ICANN.

ICANN states '“3.7.5.3 In the absence of extenuating circumstances (as defined in Section 3.7.5.1 above), a domain name must be deleted within 45 days of either the registrar or the registrant terminating a registration agreement.”" however in many cases this is not being done by registrars. I am certainly no lawyer but am a loss of who I can talk to to get clarification on the policies and seek to get the domain I want released by the registrar.

The key issue I have is that with the particular registrar in the case I am dealing with they state that they reserve the right to " to: (i) delete the domain name, (ii) renew the domain name on behalf of a third party, (iii) sell or auction the domain name; or (iv) otherwise make such domain name available to third parties" and only after the 12 months they provide as part of their "Domain Name Expiration period" has expired, which in itself would lead me to believe that they are in breech of the requirement to delete the domain anyway as they might just sell it off themselves.

Have any other Slashdotters stumbled across this and how have you moved forward to try to resolve it? Or am I trying to take on a system that is just too large for one little guy to take on? I would certainly welcome any advice on the topic.

If you are curious as to the full nature of what I am facing I have put the full details up on http://www.technicalnotebook.com/asking-the-world/registrars-hoarding-expired-domain-names/"

+ - German Court rules against Pirate Bay ISP.

Submitted by baptista
baptista writes "The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) won a victory in a German Court against the Pirate Bay. The court issued an order against the dutch owner of CB3ROB to stop service to the Pirate Bay, The article in the register assumed wrongly that CB3ROB is a German ISP. It's not. It's dutch. Sven Olaf Kamphuis, aka Count Olaf of Cyberbunker, is the outspoken owner of CB3ROB. http://bit.ly/92JG2E (The Register)

I used to work at the Cyberbunker with Sven so here's some history on it.

The Cyberbunker hosting facility referred to in the story is a former cold war military installation in the Netherlands. It is now owned by a Herman Johan Xennt (formerly Herman Johan Verwoert-Derksen aka Xennt). Xennt is a convicted felon in the Netherlands. He was arrested years ago on drug traffic charges for manufacturing ecstasy in the bunker and tax evasion. Sven Olaf Kamphuis was also arrested on the same drug charges. Kamphuis is known to the Dutch police for hacking several government computer systems.

Shortly after Xennt purchased the bunker he declared the property independent of the Netherlands, named it the Republic of Cyberbunker and installed himself as a constitutional monarchy. Kamphuis aka Count Olaf is a minister in King Xennt's Government. More information on the Republic of Cyberbunker is available at http://bit.ly/c4Xs6m

Incidentally the Cyberbunker is full of bunnies. This is a video I made of the Cyberbunker and the bunnies in 2005 http://bit.ly/PffbK

That was the one nice thing Xennt had to his character. He cared for stray animals like bunnies. Beyond that he is a reprehensible con artist who has destroyed families and stolen their life savings. I've met a few of these victims.

There is a related story I wrote on how a school in German was scammed by the Cyberbunker crew http://bit.ly/87Yjir

I support the Pirate Bay but I am concerned it's hosted by criminals these days. I know what they can do. I trained the ring leader.

"While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not," wrote Andy Rubin a Google vice-president of engineering, on the company blog. "It's remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it's clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from." Google plans to continue marketing the Nexus One through "existing retail channels", essentially partnering with carriers around the world."
