Haven't been posting much - life has been keeping me busy. What are the latest haps in the pigeon roost?
Announced at the google thing - Android Studio. It's an Android IDE built on the community version of the IntelliJ IDE by JetBrains. Here is a video of the demo. It jumps about half an hour into a much longer video and runs a couple minutes or so - then they move on to other stuff I didn't watch.
If you use KDE like I do - you may be interested in this article I found linked on Reddit - Volume Change Percentages in KDE. The idea there is that by default Kmix will increment volume changes by 4% when you use your keyboard - but it's possible to change that value. You just need to make a change to kmixrc. But you can go read it if you are interested.
I've tried with Firefox, Chrome and Opera.
I really do think that the plugin needs OpenGL - and if it does that precludes Firefox on my machine. Which isn't the end of the world.
I think I've got it nailed down a bit. When I run the nVidia drivers it is not using OpenGL. The Google Talk plugin needs OpenGL to work. I can force OpenGL to run. The the talk plugin works but Firefox will not run. If I switch to the Nouveau drivers then OpenGL will work fine without any messing about but again Firefox is unhappy.
So for right now - with my GeForce card my choice is Google Hangouts or Firefox.
What happens if I open Firefox on my Fedora 18 box and visit the Google Sites page that Sophie Schmidt made about her visit to North Korea? This happens. That's a screen shot of both my monitors. On the left is Firefox and on the right is Chrome which was open to the Journal Entry writing page here. And it got much worse once I closed Firefox. Plasma pretty much took a dump at that point and I had to log o

I get frustrated with my mobile stuff too - but the convenience if you can get it going is so nice. I really didn't want to get into the tablet world, but now that I've had one for a while I've found that I use it all the time. When I'm at home I use it to check email, browse the web, play games, etc. If I need to do any actual work I move to my Fedora machine in the office. But when I'm just kicking around in my off time it is all the tablet now.
At work I bring it to meetings and use it when I speak, do trainings, etc. It frees me up from being stuck by my laptop that is running the slides.
I've only done email two ways on android. Exchange and gmail. Gmail works great on Android. For Exchange I needed to buy a commercial app to get it to work well. I'm not surprised imap was a challenge. I've never created a google account on a device either. I'm betting that you are doing stuff that a lot of people don't do enough for it to really show up on google's radar. And while I love a lot of their products their lack of responsiveness to issues is something I really hate.
They don't really support their stuff at all. And finding answers is incredible difficult sometimes - especially when you are doing something 'different'. Right now the Hangouts functionality of g+ crashes KDE on my Fedora machine. I don't know why and haven't been able to find any clues. I can only guess it might be graphics driver related? Maybe? There's no way I know of to get help from Google or submit a bug report.
So it's a mixed bag. That said, I'm surprised at how worthwhile I've found my tablet to be.
I knew one of you would know a name for it.
Hi, my name is stoolpigeon and I'm a xenophiliac.

This is the shot I saw of some of his comments that was posted on Reddit. He seems to be rather out of touch.
Not sure if this one is real (the above I feel pretty confident is untouched) but found it funny:
The title has nothing to do with what I'll talk about - I just heard Perfect Strangers on the radio this morning and it got stuck in my head.
While it was playing I was thinking about something that happened a couple weeks ago when I was in Thailand.
If I were buying a phone right now it would be a Nexus 4. But the updates are a lot less of a big deal to me compared to just controlling my own hardware.
I really don't want to mess with iPhones. I watch the guys in my office scramble to re-jailbreak theirs each time they update. And I've not bought into any of their eco-system. I've thrown my lot in with google for the most part.
Not that I disagree with you about the Android problems. Samsung and T-Mobile in the US are horrific with updates (not sure just where the blame is with those 2). Though I've found the hardware and software on both Galaxy phones held up for quite a while. I didn't feel like I was really lacking without the updates. Moving from 4.1 to 4.2 with this phone isn't really a huge change. I wouldn't have bothered but I know this summer I'll need to be able to use it as a hot spot.
I'd love a phone running linux with KDE on top. That would make my day - but I'm not holding my breath.
Regardless of hardware/software - I dread the day I have to move back to the U.S. I was in a discussion with some other Americans this week-end and they were asking me about the state of technology in Hungary. Apparently they don't pay attention because they seemed surprised when I told them that Europe in general has much stronger broadband and mobile than the U.S. And that definitely include Hungary. I get so much more here for a lot less money.
I bought by Galaxy S3 from T-Mobile, in the US last year. So it is the SGH-T999 model. I've been very happy with it. I've stuck to running it as stock for a couple reasons. The biggest is that I just didn't want to hassle with learning how to change the underlying software. Secondly, because I wanted to keep everything cool in terms of the warranty and what not. I even jumped through all their hoops to get my unlock code from them.
Calligra Author was announced last summer. Things are still early and often there isn't much to see. (Clicking on the Author Handbook in the Author Help menu takes you to that page.) So things are still rather rough, but I bring it up because when I ran an update today Author got installed on my machine. I was excited to see that and ran it but there's not much to see yet. It's b
I've been in hotter places myself - but I don't gotta like it.
It was chilly in Istanbul when I stopped there on my way home yesterday. I've always thought of Turkey as hotter too.
Beam me up, Scotty!
