Submission + - Verizon voicemail is down

stlthVector writes: Verizon's voicemail system is down in PA, NJ, and NY. When I talked to the Verizon representative she didn't know how long it would take to fix the problem but just knew they were aware of the problem and are working on it.

When you try to check your voicemail you may get "your call cannot be completed as dialed" or nothing at all based on a number of times I tried.

Comment Virtual Disk File (Score 1) 578

Have you considered writing to a virtual disk file of some kind? You could create your own "disk" file and write to it any way you want. You just need to create your own virtual controller and disk format - though you could probably come up with some open source tools from something like Xen or Bochs to help you.

I don't know that this would be easier but it may not be harder and it could be free. If you do manage to get it to work this way you'll have the advantage of not being locked down to any specific hardware.

EA Shutting Down Video Game Servers Prematurely 341

Spacezilla writes "EA is dropping the bomb on a number of their video game servers, shutting down the online fun for many of their Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 games. Not only is the inclusion of PS3 and Xbox 360 titles odd, the date the games were released is even more surprising. Yes, Madden 07 and 08 are included in the shutdown... but Madden 09 on all consoles as well?"

Antarctic's First Plane, Found In Ice 110

Arvisp writes "In 1912 Australian explorer Douglas Mawson planned to fly over the southern pole. His lost plane has now been found. The plane – the first off the Vickers production line in Britain – was built in 1911, only eight years after the Wright brothers executed the first powered flight. For the past three years, a team of Australian explorers has been engaged in a fruitless search for the aircraft, last seen in 1975. Then on Friday, a carpenter with the team, Mark Farrell, struck gold: wandering along the icy shore near the team's camp, he noticed large fragments of metal sitting among the rocks, just a few inches beneath the water."

US Colleges Say Hiring US Students a Bad Deal 490

theodp writes "Many US colleges and universities have notices posted on their websites informing US companies that they're tax chumps if they hire students who are US citizens. 'In fact, a company may save money by hiring international students because the majority of them are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements,' advises the taxpayer-supported University of Pittsburgh (pdf) as it makes the case against hiring its own US students. You'll find identical pitches made by the University of Delaware, the University of Cincinnati, Kansas State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and other public colleges and universities. The same message is also echoed by private schools, such as John Hopkins University, Brown University, Rollins College and Loyola University Chicago."

In less than one year Google made Chrome faster and more secure than Microsoft was able to make IE since they bought NCSA Mosaic many years ago. Firefox is a great browser but it's still not as fast as Chrome and Chrome has been proven more secure - I'm sure due to its application virtualization technology.

It wouldn't surprise me if Google has a better (faster, more secure, does what most people need) OS than Microsoft or Apple in a year or two.

Battlefield Heroes Goes Into Open Beta 43

EA Digital Illusions CE has quietly opened up the beta of Battlefield Heroes, their long-delayed, free-to-play shooter. After gradually scaling up the number of players in the closed beta, they've now made the game available to everyone and lifted the NDA. EA has not yet mentioned this in an official announcement, probably hoping to keep their servers from being overwhelmed. The game's website is now accepting signups. IGN ran a hands-on preview of Battlefield Heroes back in April.

IT and Health Care 294

Punk CPA writes "Technology Review has some thoughts about why the health care industry has been so slow to adopt IT, while quick to embrace high technology in care and diagnosis. Hypothesis: making medical records available for data analysis might expose redundancy, over-testing, and other methods of extracting profits from the fee-for-service model. My take is that it might also make it much easier to gather and evaluate quality of care information. That would be chum in the water for malpractice suits."

If you didn't have to work so hard, you'd have more time to be depressed.
