+ - Nobel Prize Winner Got Free House and Free (as in Beer) Beer->

Submitted by slashchuck
slashchuck (617840) writes "Niels Bohr is one of the greatest scientists who ever lived and a favorite of his fellow Danes when he lived in Copenhagen. Apparently, after he won the Nobel Prize in 1922, the Carlsberg brewery gave him a gift – a house located next to the brewery. And the best perk of the house? It had a direct pipeline to the brewery so that Bohr had free beer on tap whenever he wanted."

+ - Nexus 4 includes support for LTE->

Submitted by slashchuck
slashchuck (617840) writes "One of the drawbacks of Google's Nexus $ was its lack of support for 4G LTE. Now comes a report from Anand Tech that is supported on on the Nexus 4.

It seems that a simple software update can allow the Nexus 4 smartphone to run on LTE Band 4. All users have to do is dial *#*#4636#*#* (INFO) or launch the Phone Info app. After that, choosing to connect to AWS networks should allow the Nexus 4 to run on LTE networks on Band 4.

The AnandTech report states explicitly that the LG Nexus 4 only works on LTE Band 4, on 1700/2100MHz frequencies, and supports bandwidths of 5,10, and 20MHz."

+ - Why MegaUpload Was Really Shut Down->

Submitted by
David Gerard
David Gerard writes "In December of 2011, just weeks before the takedown, Digital Music News reported on something new that the creators of Megaupload were about to unroll. Something that would rock the music industry to its core: MegaBox. MegaBox was going to be an alternative music store that was entirely cloud-based and offered artists a better money-making opportunity than they would get with any record label — "allowing artists to keep 90 percent of earnings.""

Submitted by alphadogg
alphadogg (971356) writes "Microsoft has named a Russian man as the alleged creator of Kelihos, a spammy botnet that abused the company's Hotmail service until the botnet was shutdown last September. In a legal filing on Monday, Microsoft identified the man as Andrey N. Sabelnikov of St. Petersburg, adding that he freelances for a software development company and formerly worked for a computer security software company. The public naming by Microsoft could put further pressure on Russia to investigate alleged cybercriminals."

+ - What's going on with Google Groups??->

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "Starting sometime earlier this month, Google Groups abruptly stopped sending notifications to Groups managers that there were messages pending. That meant that moderated groups ground to a halt until people started wondering what was going on and finally logged in. I'm in India and was affected; so are users in several other countries. Not a peep from Google. Maybe Google wants moderators to log into the web interface, or maybe the Google Groups project has been downsized to a single engineer...who's been on vacation?

Threads on this:
Not receiving email notification of messages waiting to be moderated

Google Groups: No email notification to approve pending messages
(Comments from an irate user: "If Google does not correct this problem, they will follow Yahoo's fate" and "GOOGLE, where is your leadership? You should at least address this issue !!!!"

Why did Google Groups stop sending a preview / notification email to the group moderator this week?

Email notifications of new posts are not going out.

I do not receive notifications for Google group emails. How can it be fixed?"

+ - Mozilla releases Rust 0.1->

Submitted by
MrSeb writes "After more than five years in the pipeline, Mozilla Labs and the Rust community have released the first alpha of the Rust programming language compiler. The Rust language emphasizes concurrency and memory safety, and — if everything goes to plan — is ultimately being groomed to replace C++ as Mozilla’s compiled language of choice, with Firefox (or parts of it) eventually being re-written in Rust."

Mirror Worlds Technologies, Inc. was a company based in New Haven, Connecticut, which created software using ideas from the book Mirror Worlds: or the Day Software Puts the Universe in a Shoebox...How It Will Happen and What It Will Mean (1992) by Yale professor David Gelernter, who helped found the company and served as chief scientist. The company ceased operations in 2004.

The troll is Mirror Worlds, LLC of Tyler, Texas (a subsidiary of Plainfield Specialty Holdings I, Inc.) which filed the suit against Apple, Inc. for patent infringement .

These trolls buy up patent rights of defunct companies and use them as an excuse to file infringement lawsuits.

I believe that professor has nothing to do with this lawsuit.
