Germany, Ireland, and the Czech Republic have entered into a mult-lateral agreement to fight the Leprechaun scourge and reduce the number of children replaced by fairy changelings by 2025.

There's that tipping point when the work gets harder, the code is even more rotted, the "process" is even more constricting, because they know something is wrong but they need to "measure" everything to figure out why. That's when people are running, not walking out the door.
2. Convention/Conference goers
In the case of #1, you're probably not a repeat customer (or at least, repeat often enough for them to care). They want to wring every last dollar out of you while they can.
In the case of #2, you're a captive customer (the con is nearby or in this hotel, unless you have a car you're not going to wander far), and you might possibly be able to expense things.
If you were a high-roller that stayed regularly, I'll bet you they wouldn't nickle and dime you, not unless they were morons and wanted to drive you into the hands of the competition. The rest of us are just sheep to be fleeced.
For the lower cost hotels (like the Holiday Inn Expresses), where there is no built in restaurant, and they offer amenities like free wifi and free continental breakfast, they're targeting repeat business and price sensitive travelers. They often don't have the best location compared to the resort hotels (you *will* need a car), but as a consequence their expenses are probably lower. The more extreme version of this are the Extended Stay type hotels, which have kitchens and refrigerators.
The really dumpy hotels have no choice. Their plant is run down, and they may be a no-name. Unless they offer free amenities, nobody in their right mind is going to stay at their place (assuming similar nightly rents) unless there's no choice.
You figure they had the tech to identify the infringing images to begin with. Why not just say to Microsoft "hey, we have this set of algorithms that you're welcome to use to improve your widget. Let's talk about blanket licensing for Bing in exchange for downstream revenue."
We've known how to build these reactors for over 20 years now. They're called 2nd generation breeder reactors.
Why don't we have them?
Because the anti-nuclear crazies are able to scream loud enough that the organized incompetence known as government shut it all down.
The meanie greenie vegeterrorists are not the electorate.
They're just single issue schizophrenics who make lots of noise.
There is no problem to be solved.
Women who want to become software engineers are free to do so. There are no barriers. That women tend to choose other careers is the result of human nature. Like it or not, boys and girls are different, and those differences are immutable.
As for "minorities," the very term is meaningless. Anyone of any color, creed, sex, or religion is (in America at least) free to pursue these careers. Trying to bean count the number of Inuit who are code jockeys is ridiculous and ultimately degrading to those being counted.
Google is being shook down by the race and sex hustlers, nothing more. They company is all too aware that these free classes are not going to change the demographics of software engineers. They're doing this as a PR stunt to fend off the hustlers, who will eventually move on to some other target who is more willing to be shook down.
Men are an extreme minority in the child care services industry. Early childhood development programs at colleges and universities are essentially estrogen clubs. There are no men anywhere. Why? Because human nature is what it is, and the nature of men does not include such things.
What does it matter how many girls are doing what?
Young women are going to do precisely what they want. No one is stopping them from pursuing computer science or engineering careers. These fields pay well. There are many clear and obvious incentives to pursue these careers. If young women tend to choose other careers more often than young men, this does not represent a problem in need of a solution.
Promoting a class based on its female participation rate is absurd.
Free trade is good. Getting government out of the business of telling businesses how to do business -- is good.
Doing this in secret....not so good.
This kind of secrecy does to trust in government what tariffs and regulation do to the economy, undermine it.
The EPA can continue to undermine the economy in pursuit of fairy tales.
This is, belive it or not, the biggest political scandal within living memory, possibly in all of American history.
An arm of the federal government targets citizens for intimidation based on their political beliefs, likely at the behest of the White House. When the jig is up, the miscreants do everything they can to lie, obfuscate, and destroy evidence.
Political revolutions have started over less.
So yahoo hires the best people for the job, and this is supposed to be news?
I'm sick and tired of whiny losers complaining that they can't get a job because of their ethnicity.
NO. You can't get a job because you SUCK. The job market does not care what color you are, what church you go to, or where your ancestors migrated here from. The only thing the job market cares about is your ability to produce value. If you can't do it, the market will choose someone else who can. If you can do it, then welcome to the winner's circle my son.
This nonsense about juding a company's hiring practices by the skin of their employees is woefully pathetic peurile garbage.
We now live a country where one's property can be stripped away just because someone else doesn't like it.
I'd like to quote the great philosopher Nelson Muntz, who so eloquently said:
Republican Party hacks are hereby on notice that the conservatives you depend on to get elected can and will remove you from office if you displease us.
Why on earth would anyone use a holiday celebrated by socialists as their marketing buzzword?
Knowing absolutely NOTHING about this effort, I'm instantly opposed to it on this basis alone.
This is like calling your new computer system the CyberStalin. Anyone who would do so is either ignorant, crazy, or evil.
