StealthHunter writes "Cambridge researchers found a hardware backdoor after discovering additional functionality in the JTAG (hardware debugging / programming) interface. While such attacks have been theorized, this is thought to be the first real-world instance. The vulnerable product is the Actel ProASIC3, and, since the backdoor is in the hardware, there is no patch other than to physically replace the chip."

Investors and analysts say the chief executive has until early 2013 to prove he made the right choice by partnering with Microsoft Windows or his future at the loss-making company will be called into question. Nokia still sells almost a million phones a day but analysts are pessimistic on the outlook, predicting Lumia 920 will lose out to Apple's iPhone 5 at the top end of the smartphone market in the 2012 holiday season. "Elop has not been able to attract customers and that is what counts. You can say that he has not had enough time, but he has been there for two years. Time is up," said Magnus Rehle, senior partner in Greenwich Consulting, which advises large telecoms companies. The moment of truth for Elop's strategy shift came in early September when Nokia launched its first models using new Windows Phone 8 software."

Legislation will be introduced next year to force ISPs to filter all refused-classification material."

Being force-fed this kind of thing is pretty unpleasant

If the was Microsoft, and you didn't know better, then perhaps it's fair to say you are being "force fed" this change. However, this is OSS, and nobody is forcing you to use Gnome Shell. You have options: stick with Gnome 2.x, use XFCE, KDE or any of the other window managers available. Just stop whinging about how you don't like it.

While the likes of a 3D Miley Cyrus concert aren't exactly groundbreaking, this will give 3D viewing at home much more publicity, paving the way for even more interesting projects in the future. In partnership with retailer Sainsbury's, Channel 4 are producing free 3D glasses so that as many people as possible can watch them, although it's unclear which of the various types they'll be. "

Executive summary: On a quad core machine, Con's BFS scheduler encodes x264 video with speed gains up to 70% (compared to the existing Linux scheduler)!"

Jammie Thomas To Appeal $1.9 Million RIAA Verdict 204

CNet reports that the lawyers representing Jammie Thomas-Rasset have confirmed she will be fighting the $1.9 million verdict handed down in her case against the RIAA. "The Recording Industry Association of America said on Monday that it had made a phone call to Sibley and law partner Kiwi Camara last week to ask whether Thomas-Rasset wanted to discuss a settlement. An RIAA representative said that its lawyers were told by Sibley that Thomas-Rasset wasn't interested in discussing any deal that required her to admit guilt or pay any money. ... 'She's not interested in settling,' attorney Joe Sibley said in a brief phone interview. 'She wants to take the issue up on appeal on the constitutionality of the damages. That's one of the main arguments — that the damages are disproportionate to any actual harm.'"

Now that the worm has begun to spread in secrecy, expect the number of new PC user attacks to grow. According to Guy Bunker, a computer security expert at Symantec., Conficker infiltrates as many as 50,000 new PCs every day. What makes matters worse is that the virus has no specific target area, as all of the victims are dispersed throughout the world. Among the countries hit hardest by Conficker are the United States, Brazil and India. A total of 350,000 incident reports have been filed in these 3 countries alone. The next three countries on the Conficker "hit list" are Mexico, Italy and China. These 3 countries comprise a total of 89,000 Conficker complaints to date."
