Piracy

+ - Warner Bro. Accused of Pirating Anti-Pirating Tech-> 1

Submitted by psycho12345
psycho12345 (1134609) writes "German firm Medien Patent Verwaltung claims that in 2003, it revealed a new kind of anti-piracy technology to Warner Bros. that marks films with specific codes so pirated copies can be traced back to their theaters of origin. But like a great, hilariously-ironic DRM Ouroborus, the company claims that Warner began using the system throughout Europe in 2004 but hasn't actually paid a dime for it."

Submitted by psycho12345
psycho12345 (1134609) writes "HP has just announced that it's acquiring Palm to the tune of $1.2 billion, which works out to $5.70 per share of Palm common stock. The deal is planned to close by July 31, which marks the end of HP's third fiscal quarter of the year. Current Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein is "expected to remain with the company," though it's not said in what capacity.

Kinda surprising, but not entirely unexpected."

+ - Enhancement to P2P found to help network costs->

Submitted by psycho12345
psycho12345 (1134609) writes "A study, sponsored by Verizon and Yale, finds that if P2P software is written more "intelligently" (by localizing requests), the effect of bandwidth hogging is vastly reduced. According to the study, redoing the P2P into what they call P4P can reduce the number of "hops" by an average of 400%. With localized P4P, less of the sharing occurs over large distances, instead making requests of nearby clients (geographically)."
