Submission + - Ableton Live Killer "Bitwig Studio" Released for Linux (

polyp2000 writes: Myself and a many others will be pretty excited to learn that we now have the option ditch proprietary os'es in the music studio because in addition to OSX & Windows ; Linux is supported. So here we have a cross-platform DAW designed from the upstart by a team who left Ableton to come up with something designed to shake up the market somewhat and solve some of the problems with traditional DAW's.

Some people may be a little disheartened to learn that it is not open source (that doenst really bother me) — but it does feature an open API to permit modding of the software. It also supports VST's and linux native plugins. I will be taking the demo for a test drive tonight. Are there any linux users here on Slashdot that have been lucky enough to have tried the beta yet?

Submission + - Alternative Broadband Delivery Systems

polyp2000 writes: Soon I will be moving to the country. I have a possible issue in that broadband speeds are not that brilliant. Since I will be working from home a fair chunk of time and its looking likely im not going to be able to get cable internet — i've been looking at
other possibilities for getting decent speeds. Most places with internet over phone line
it looks like we will be lucky to get 2mb in the areas we are looking at — im going to want something
better than that especially if i am working from home.

I found an interesting alternative using bi-directional satellite

i wondered if anyone knows much about this kind of service — is it what its cracked up to be?
Are there other alternatives i should take a look into?

polyp2000 writes: I just read that Novell is to be aquired by Attachmate.Novell investors will get $6.10 a share, Attachmate, a software company owned by private-equity firms including Golden Gate Capital Corp., said today in a statement. That’s 9.1 percent more than Novell’s closing price on Nov. 19. Novell will also sell some intellectual-property assets to a group of technology companies led by Microsoft Corp. for $450 million. The question on every bodies lips is what happens to the ownership of their UNIX IP — will that be part of the IP sold to the Microsoft — led group of companies. Slashdotters ... Discuss....
