ubersonic writes "While insurance companies never seem to respect the privacy of their customers, European insurer Uniqua reached a new low with the introduction of PAYD (pay as you drive) recently. Uniqa's customers who choose the PAYD-model are going to have a NaviBox called "SafeLine" installed in their cars. The small box contains a GPS receiver and a GSM unit, which forwards once daily real-time information to a central computer. The users premiums are then calculated on the base of this data. The personal data protecting organization ARGE-Daten (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Daten, Engl.: Working group "Data Protection") is deeply concerned about the fairness of the new appliance. No one knows for what else this data might be used in the future."

Crackers use outdates blogs and forum software to enter a server and install automated browser exploits frameworks, infecting visitors with trojans and adware. Earlier today reports about Al Gore's site, climatecrisis.net (source cleaned up already), being hacked surfaced. Someone managed to place stealth links on the site, linking to cracked blogs on .edu servers. These cracked blogs in turn, redirect you to a pharmacy site, but only if your referrer is Google or ask. If you type in the UTL by hand you will be greeted by a normal blog post about pharmaceuticals. Read Symantecs full report on the incident, Computerworlds writeup or view a screenshot of the cracked sites source code. No one knows how long this links have been there, but according to Symantec the technique worked, placing those spam sites on top spot with Google for their respective keywords."

12357bd writes "Just some days ago there was a firehose entry about a serious math bug (wrong sign for some abs() expressions) on gcc for wersions 3.x to 4.1, but never reached the main /. page. Such an important information for developers should not pass without proper announcement.

The bug was detected Nov 17, and has been already fixed."

An anonymous reader writes "Wikileaks is a website running on modified MediaWiki software which allows whistleblowers to anonymously release government and corporate documents, allegedly without possible retribution. It claims that postings are untraceable by anyone attempting to do so. Since a few days ago Wikileaks published US government documents about Guantanamo Operating Procedures and Iraq equipment and was subsequently apparently taken down. The Chinese government currently attempts to censor every web site with "wikileaks" in the URL, and now it seems USA has joined them."

A novel combination of advanced physics equipment and imaging technology found in most off-the-shelf digital cameras has done the trick. 'We have proven in a direct and clear way that this extremely neutron-deficient nucleus disintegrates by the simultaneous emission of two protons,' one of the researchers is quoted."

It's a long-argued question of fundamental scientific interest and practical importance as well, with significant implications for attempts to build solid-state quantum computers. Researchers at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and their collaborators at the University of Frankfurt, Germany; Kansas State University; and Auburn University have now established that quantum particles start behaving in a classical way on a scale as small as a single hydrogen molecule. They reached this conclusion after performing what they call the world's simplest — and certainly its smallest — double slit experiment, using as their two "slits" the two proton nuclei of a hydrogen molecule, only 1.4 atomic units apart (a few ten-billionths of a meter)."
