+ - Windows developer explains why NT Kernel is losing to Linux in performance

Submitted by parallel_prankster
parallel_prankster writes "A windows developer explains the cold hard truth behind why Windows Kernel performance is degrading. From the article "Windows is indeed slower than other operating systems in many scenarios, and the gap is worsening. The cause of the problem is social. There's almost none of the improvement for its own sake, for the sake of glory, that you see in the Linux world. Granted, occasionally one sees naive people try to make things better. These people almost always fail.""

You don't get the point. It is about the gatekeeper's ego. If everything he described happened, then it would have made a lot more sense to make the corrections just because it is nice to be honest sometimes you know. She stole the boat because her attitude is like "if you don't do everything the way I want you to do it or if I sense even the slightest disrespect, I will F**K your things". That is what we face at airports too.

I dont remember the last time we had a dept that was so pathetic, inefficient, useless, corrupt and annoying as the Dept. of Homeland Security. Why do these people even exist? I dont feel any safer with them being around at all. Just yesterday there was an article in Slate about how insecure airport perimeter security is. http://www.slate.com/blogs/crime/2013/02/20/airport_diamond_heist_it_is_shockingly_easy_to_breach_perimeter_security.html

+ - Amazon Sells Out Predator Drone Toy After Mocking Reviews

Submitted by parallel_prankster
parallel_prankster writes "Amazon users are addressing the drone controversy with sarcasm. Maisto International Inc.’s model Predator drones are selling out on Amazon.com Inc.’s website as parody reviews highlight how the toys can help children hone killing skills, mocking a controversial U.S. practice. The toy is a replica of the RQ-1 Predator, an unmanned aircraft that the U.S. Air Force has used in combat over Afghanistan, Pakistan, Serbia, Iraq and Yemen, according to the product description on Amazon. Only one of the $49.99 military-style toy jets is available for purchase on Amazon’s site, which is brimming with assessments laced with dark humor. “You can’t spell slaughter without laughter,” one pithy joker wrote.
While Facebook and Twitter have always been more prominent forums for political satire, consumers have flocked to Amazon’s review section before. In October, the user comment section of an Avery Dennison Corp. binder listed on the e- commerce site became the subject of a similar outbreak. Reviewers used Amazon to make light of a comment made by then- Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney during a debate. Amazon’s conditions of use posted on its website say that the Seattle-based company reserves the right to remove or edit reviews, which it doesn’t regularly examine. So far the reviews have not been removed."

On one side you have John Broder who it seems like wants to see this tech fail for some reason or the other (This is just my personal opinion from reading his prior articles). That is the kind of mindset he was in before he even started test driving this. On the other side you have Elon Musk who wants to sell people this new tech which will obviously have some issues in the beginning (which Musk would rather not talk about instead and blame everyone else for it.) . The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. However, Musk's blog post was so convincing I almost find myself not rooting for John Broder at all!

The way we compete with China and India is by improving our skill sets and by automating our factories. If we don't need hundreds and thousands of workers as cheap labor, then we don't need to outsource of jobs. 3D printing is one example of tech that can help. AI may be can help too in this. The other thing that can help is high skill tech jobs like game programming. If more and more folks in the US start learning skills that are sparse then we don't need as many folks from India to do the same jobs. There will be some outsourcing still due to greed/low wages etc but it wont be on such a large scale.

I always thought that Android was more of a project by Google just to make sure Apple has some competition in the market. Android was extremely sh*tty for a long time. Over time Android is no longer going to be supported by Google. I think Google does not care so much about open source. Its main goal is to gravitate people towards Linux-like OSes and ultimately make them use Chrome OS. That is the OS that they are going to put their heart and soul in. Think about it, whatever category you put Chrome OS in - mobile (Android), desktop/tablet(linux variants), there is always some other open-source non-Windows, non-MAC OS. Why would they need to make a new one?

The more important matter is how much are they being used, especially to "socialize" as compared to facebook? I mean Google forces you to be a Google+ user pretty much if you use any of their services - Gmail, Picasa etc. What are the ad revenues on these services? What is the frequency of posts per user?

Are there infinite ways to screw grammar while creating password? I would think there are certain patterns in which people mis-use grammar. I would imagine though that at some point if every one started using bad grammar styles for constructing passwords, that those patterns would become identifiable and then someone would put together a password cracker that would deal with poor-grammar-filled passwords as well right? I couldn't find the exact paper to read but the example on the website "ihave3cats" seems to be a like a language thing that can be identified at some point by some urban dictionary reader!

I thnk some of the answers are in the article already now that I read it. Still, the study is pretty non-eye-opening with the exception that it debunks the usual myth about pot smokers. I have had lots of friends over the years here in California who smoked pot and they definitely did not get any dumber with that. Ofcourse, that is just my observation.
