+ - US may disable all in-car mobile phones->

Submitted by
gambit3
gambit3 writes "The US government may require cars to include scrambling tech that would disable mobile-phone use by drivers, and perhaps passengers. "I think it will be done," US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said on Wednesday morning. "I think the technology is there and I think you're going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones." LaHood is on a self-described "rampage" against distracted driving, and if making it impossible to use a mobile phone while in a car can save lives, he's all for it."

Girl Claims Price Scanner Gave Her Tourette's Syndrome 558

Posted by samzenpus
from the it's-$4.99-you-f*#@ing-co^&%#@!er dept.
Attorneys for Dominica Juliano claim that she was burned and developed psychological problems after a store clerk aimed a hand-held price scanner at her face. Store attorneys say their scanners uses a harmless LED light and that the girl had serious health problems before she was scanned. From the article: "Dominica Juliano was 12 when she and her grandmother entered the Country Fair store in Erie in June 2004. A clerk allegedly called the girl 'grumpy' before flashing his hand-held bar code scanner over her face and telling her to smile. Attorneys for Ms. Juliano and her guardian say the girl was sensitive to light and burned, and later developed post-traumatic stress and Tourette's syndrome."

+ - Astronomers Explode Virtual Supernova

Submitted by

DynaSoar writes "Scientists at the University of Chicago's Center for Astrophysical Thermonuclear Flashes have created a simulation of a white dwarf exploding into a type 1a supernova http://space.com/scienceastronomy/070322_stellar_e xplosion.html. Using 700 processors and 58,000 hours, they produced a three second movie showing the initial burst that is thought to be the source of much of the iron in the universe. Understanding these supernova is also important to testing current cosmological theories regarding dark matter and dark energy, as their brightness is used as a measurement of distance, and discrepancies found in the brightness of very distant supernovae consistently seem to indicate a change in the speed of expansion of the universe over time."

+ - Getting out of two-year cellphone contracts

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "The Star news online has an article on getting out of 2-year cell phone contracts.. It discusses attempts made by people to get out of contracts. "Pretending to be dead, however, does not work well as a way to break a contract. Sprint Nextel, Verizon and Cingular, for example, may ask for a death certificate. T-Mobile says it does not." It also discusses other "strategies" such as joining the military, moving to a roaming location and so on. Any slashdot readers have interesting experiences on cancelling cell phone contracts, successes and failures?"
