Career Diary of an Animation Studio Owner
by Joseph Daniels
A quick read, this book covers the day-to-day life of a one person animation studio. Long hours, frustration, and dealing with the business end balance out the flexible (and financially precarious) world that the author shows us. A great glimpse into what it would really be like to do this kind of work.

This is why I got out of game design and into the much more fun and socially useful career of Solving The World's Problems in Medical Genetics and Biochemistry as a Bioinformatician ...
Most of the time the stress is fairly low and the hours are fairly flexible, other than around grant renewal and data call, but those are fairly predictable.
Plus, you can decide to go skiing when you want and not worry about customers calling you.
