+ - Mozilla is mapping cell towers and WiFi access points->

Submitted by neiras
neiras (723124) writes "Mozilla is building a map of publicly-observable cell tower and WiFi access points to compete with proprietary geolocation services like Google's. Coverage is a bit thin so far but is improving rapidly.

Anyone with an Android phone can help by downloading the MozStumbler app and letting it run while walking or driving around. The application is also available on the F-Droid market."

+ - Filtering software now required on all Chinese PCs

Submitted by neiras
neiras (723124) writes "The BBC is reporting that China's ruling Communist Party has ordered all citizens to install government-controlled filtering software on their computers. Apparently the software only manages to filter pages visited in Internet Explorer, transmits user information over the wire in without encryption, and is so poorly implemented that it may effectively make every Chinese desktop vulnerable to exploitation. Here comes the One Botnet To Rule Them All!"

Is it possible that software is not like anything else, that it is meant to be discarded: that the whole point is to always see it as a soap bubble?
