Roadtrip course determined by online voters->

Submitted by
Dan Hunter
Dan Hunter writes "Polls Boutique (pollsb.com), a rich-media polling site, just sent three people on a cross-country roadtrip. The catch: what they do, where they go, and who drives is all determined by online votes on the pollsb.com website. Right now the guys are in Charleston SC, and it seems the crowd has decided (by 54%) to send them to Savannah GA next. link: http://www.pollsb.com/aidan/recent"

Administrators watch out: "Chaos" about to->

Submitted by
juct
juct writes "The CCC summer camp is about to start and administrators are advised to check their web pages more often than usual to check whether geeks have wreaked havoc there. The number of web page manipulation incidents always increases during CCC events. During the 21st Chaos Communication Congress in 2004, about 18,000 web sites suffered intrusions, this year there are already three sites listed as being hacked before the event even started."

Tom Cruise to appear in the next Star Trek film?-> 1

Submitted by
RyGuy
RyGuy writes "IGN has learned from a trusted source that director J.J. Abrams would like to have an A-list star cameo in his forthcoming big-screen reboot of Star Trek. According to our source — whose scoops have always panned out in the past — Abrams is wooing [...] Tom Cruise to cameo in Star Trek ... as Captain Christopher Pike!

Trekkers know that Pike was James T. Kirk's predecessor as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise and Mr. Spock's first commanding officer. Pike was the captain in the original and unaired TV pilot, "The Cage," where he was portrayed by the late Jeffrey Hunter."

Star Trek:TOS special effects to be remastered->

Submitted by
Raver32
Raver32 writes "As I settled in, half attentive, I started noticing something was odd. First off, the crew's uniforms were brighter than I remembered. And wait, why was the image on the bridge view screen so crisp? Even odder, when the ship entered orbit around a planet, it's features, as well as those of the Enterprise, seemed much more detailed. Not only that, the planet was much larger in respect to my favorite starship; the scale seemed much more realistic. Later, in a shuttle bay scene, I could swear I saw figures in the windows of the observation decks looking down on a landing shuttlecraft. Wait a minute, what shuttle bay observation decks? By now I was wide awake. Something had changed. Had I, in my grogginess, somehow slipped into an alternate universe? That would be bad, because it would mean my evil version would be terrorizing loved ones back on my Earth, maybe getting into a low-speed chase with the police, or even more terrifying — writing SciAm blogs celebrating the Creationist Museum. Thankfully, I was in the right universe but just witnessing the new digitally remastered version of the original series. This is an as yet unfinished project being produced by CBS Digital that plans to revamp all 79 original episodes."

Wind, Water, and DC: Generate, Store, Transmit->

Submitted by dewarrn1
dewarrn1 writes "The Economist summarizes a proposal by Jürgen Schmid of ISET who suggests that the efficiencies realized by converting the EU's long-distance electricity transmission to DC would allow temporary surpluses of power to be stored at remote hydroelectric facilities. This would mean that peaks and valleys in variable sources of power, e.g., wind and solar, could be smoothed out by pumping water back into remote reservoirs in high-production periods and recovering that power in high-demand or low-output periods later. Some small scale efforts to introduce DC transmission are reported."

Free Cell Phone Alerts for School Lockdowns

Submitted by
monta
monta writes "The following web site: ttp://www.lockdownalert.com/ will send a text to your cell phone if there is a "lockdown" at a school you specify. There is no charge, and no account creation necessary. There is also no validation, so it would be easy for anyone to sign up anyone else, which could be an issue, but that's just the ISO (Internet Security Officer) in me."
