Florida Activates System For Citizens To Call Each Other Terrorists 501

An anonymous reader writes "Sheriffs in 13 Northeast Florida counties announced an online system Thursday for residents to report suspicious activity they think may be terrorism-related. The site provides examples of red flags to watch for, such as people with an unusual interest in building plans or who are purchasing materials useful in bomb making. Important places to watch include hobby stores and dive shops."

Electrical Engineer Unemployment Soars; Software Developers' Rate Drops to 2.2% 419

dcblogs writes "The unemployment rate for people at the heart of many tech innovations — electrical engineers — soared in the first quarter of this year to 6.5%. That's nearly double the unemployment rate from last year. The reasons for the spike aren't clear, but the IEEE-USA says the increase is alarming. At the same time, U.S. Labor Dept. data showed that jobs for software developers are on the rise. The unemployment rate for software engineers was 2.2% in the first quarter, down from 2.8% last year. This professional group warns that unemployment rates for engineers could get worse if H-1B visas are increased. The increase in engineering unemployment comes at the same time demand for H-1B visas is up."

+ - The mystery of the shrunken proton->

Submitted by

gbrumfiel writes "The proton is behaving badly. When measured with electrons it is 0.87 femtometers in radius, but when measured with muons, the heavier cousin of the electron, it appears to be only 0.84 femtometers. 0.00000000000003 millimetres isn't much, but it's still bigger than the error bars on either measurement. The discrepancy first popped up in 2010, and at the time, most physicists thought that an error would explain it. But new results published in this week's issue of Science (paper, sub required) show the same discrepancy. Worse still, researchers have spent three years looking for a mistake in their equations and come up with zilch. Could it be that muons and electrons interact with protons in a fundamentally different way?"

+ - Startup brings algorithmic trading to the masses->

Submitted by macson_g
macson_g writes "Algorithmic and High-frequency trading seems to be hated by the geek community. This may change with Quantopian, a new service allowing anyone with programming skills to try algo trading from home.

High frequency trading has been scrutinized in recent years because of its links to financial scares like the Flash Crash. But the actual algorithms used to power much of high frequency trading are not well understood, and locked up in hedge funds and large financial firms. Startup Quantopian, which is coming out of beta today, aims to make these algorithms available to a much larger audience.

+ - Half Life is now available natively on Steam for Linux->

Submitted by Conzar
Conzar writes "I loaded up my steam client for Linux tonight and found a pleasant surprise waiting in my library to be downloaded. That's right, one of the greatest FPS's in history, Half Life. I downloaded the game which didn't take any time at all. I fired it up, configured my options (max res is 1920x1080) and played the first 10 minutes of the game without any problems!

For those that have Ubuntu, Steam, and have Half Life (Beta) in their library, its a must play even if the game is over 10 years old."
