I just installed 8 Cree LR6 LED lights in our living room. These fit standard 6 inch cans, but they have some that fit 4" cans I believe.

I would say that the light is basically indistinguishable from incandescent lights and they use about 1/6 the power for the same light.

Highly recommended.

Libido Reduction Methods and Techniques?

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "Underutilized libido is a big problem for many attached males, especially those on slashdot. Women no longer need men to gather and hunt and have evolved away from the need to satisfy their partners. To cope, I now run 6 miles per day, took up the guitar, and added a part-time job... I get to sleep faster, but it doesn't take the edge off while I'm awake, and nobody wants to waste hour after hour on traditional methods. I'd seriously considering faking depression just to get antidepressants for the promise of a significantly reduced drive. Has anybody had luck finding ways to kill off this incessant biological drive that provides no benefit for the oppressed modern man?"

Good co-lo or virtual server shops?

Submitted by gclef
gclef writes "Speakeasy announced recently that they're being bought by BestBuy. Despite all the promises to the contrary, I suspect my ability to host servers in my home is going away soon. Does anyone in the Slashdot crowd have hints as to where I get reasonable co-lo space or reasonable virtual hosting? I don't want to outsource the management of my domains entirely, nor will 'webhosting' be good enough...I like having control of my own stuff (and like running my own DNS, IMAPS, etc servers). I just want somewhere that will give me a blank box with an unfiltered connection to the net. Anyone have good/bad experiences with the various places doing this?"

Did your Employer Remove Flash for the NCAAs?

Submitted by
fistfullast33l
fistfullast33l writes "Last week when I logged into Windows on Monday (my IT department reboots our computers every weekend), I was prompted by the Helpdesk to install a new Flash update, for reasons that I don't remember due to the fact I didn't read them. This week, I've noticed that Flash oriented sites have stopped working, including YouTube and ESPN. ESPN is curious and got me thinking. With March Madness raging these next few weeks, is it possible that my IT department decided to uninstall Flash to counter employees watching games? Did you or someone you know have to work on this initiative this year? How many of you had Flash uninstalled or disabled, or even had ESPN or Sports Illustrated or CBS blocked due to the tournament this month?"

C# vs VB in the .Net Environment

Submitted by groslyunderpaid
groslyunderpaid writes "I work in a 75 employee company. We build our own Web Applications for in house use, and some of them are also presented on a company extranet for 400 Agents to use.

We are a Microsoft shop, and until now have been strictly VB .Net (using Visual Studio .Net 2003 w/ .Net 1.1).

The old web developers have left the company and new blood has been hired. The new guys are pleading for the ability to use C# instead of VB.

What are the advantages one language has over the other, and vice versa? For what reasons would you want to program in one instead of the other, or NOT program in one as opposed to the other? Are there any additional security concerns from a Systems Administrator position when allowing one over the other?"

What do you do when you can't afford a SAN?

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "What's the next best solution to having a full SAN setup for central data storage? Setting up an enterprise level SAN is so expensive that the company I work for wants to know what other solutions there are to this situation. NAS is cool for at home, but would it work for a high trafficked website? I don't know of any self contained NAS solutions that offer data redundancy. The only way I can think of to get that would be to have an actual server with RAID set up on the disks. I have searched the web, reading white papers and other material, but I would like to hear from the horse's mouth what works best and is easiest to set up. One thing to keep in mind, and I know many /. readers will not like this but, we are in a Windows environment, and the gears that turn will not be able to change this."

IP Address Management

Submitted by haggisbrain
haggisbrain writes "I'm a Systems Administrator and I've recently started work with a new company where I'm now helping to support a much larger number of nodes that I've previously supported. We have just over 1000 nodes to support but no efficient method to manage the IP addresses and subnets used. Previously an Excel Spreadsheet has been sufficient enough for my needs but now I need to find a new way.

Can someone recommend a piece of software which can help me? Primarily I'm looking for a simple way to list and view the IP addresses used on my network but surely there must be a better solution than using another Excel Spreadsheet?"

Best Open Source Automated Testing Tools?

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "As a software test engineer, I've found that one of the most common client questions involves automated testing. They typically want to know how much of your testing is going to be automated (so that they can presumably get their money's worth out of you and the hardware they bought for you). It's often difficult to tell the customer that there are certain applications for which automated testing (not at the unit level) has only limited appropriateness, and they never want to pay for testing tools. I've visited opensourcetesting.org to try getting an idea of some of the best tools for testing web applications, and gotten some good ideas. Anyone have any favorite OSS load/integration testing automated tools that are easily configurable and usable by a test team with reasonably good (but not expert) Linux skills?"

Firewall Recommendations

Submitted by
anomalous cohort
anomalous cohort writes "The company that I work for is looking at upgrading to a proper firewall (sadly, we use only the MS-ISA server now). Our I.T. guy is ready to recommend Fortigate [45]00a. Ours is a small company with about a dozen employees and about 400 customers. Does anybody have any experiences, good or bad, with these two products or with the Fortinet company? Are there any recommended firewalls (outside of Cisco's) that we should seriously look at?"

Don't get to bragging.
