Mathematics

According to G. H. Hardy, "Beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics." (A Mathematician's Apology) It is primarily for this reason that I wish to study it at university -- formal mathematics at university level has this beauty and grace to it that many other subjects lack. Reading around the subject has further developed my interest, and I have learnt a great deal from books such as Numbers and Proofs, by R.J.B.T Allenby.

Techdirt: Is Technology Making Everyone Shy?->

From feed by techdirtfeed
We've seen technology blamed for all sorts of things over the years, but this may be the first time we've seen the rise of gadgets blamed for a "shyness epidemic" (via The Raw Feed). Apparently, the number of "shy" people out there is increasing -- though, the article is quite short on details. It only says that 40% of people used to report being shy, and these days 50% do. However, it doesn't say when that change happened or look into whether or not there's any sort of self-reporting bias for this data. Instead, it appears that folks just want to blame technology, saying that the lack of face-to-face or voice communication means that people are somehow losing the ability to be comfortable in those types of interactions. It would be nice to see this backed up with a little more than just the fact that more people self-report being shy -- though, it's certainly possible that these gadgets do put up a shield that prevents people from getting over shyness. It would just be nice to see some additional research that looks at the actual impact, rather than just jumping to the conclusion.

Journal: Why the FSF Misses the Point 5

Journal by einhverfr

This is intended as a rebuttle to the document at http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html. My own thinking, as a FOSS developer, is that the FSF has always been a fairly coercive organization for one which advocates freedom and while their goals are noble I have grown increasingly concerned with their methods. I don't beieve that my criticism amounts to a mere legitimate disagreement over p

+ - Plasma-Based Life possible? 1

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "According to Space.com, Researchers from Germany's Max Planck Institute have created a computer model demonstrating that microscopic dust-particles injected into low-temperature plasmas spontaneously self-organize into crystalline structures resembling DNA and other biological structures. Team member V.N. Tsytovich states "These complex, self-organized plasma structures exhibit all the necessary properties to qualify them as candidates for inorganic living matter."

No word yet on how this discovery might affect Human-Klingon relations."

Russia's War on Piracy/Malicious Software 150

from the legitimacy-and-furry-hats dept.
tmk writes "Russian minister Leonid Reiman has announced new legislation to fight software piracy. According to official information the share of pirated software in the Russian Federation decreased in the last years from 90 to 60 percent. Reiman dismissed as a myth the impression that many viruses originate in his country: 'Viruses are written all over the world. Russia is waging a consistent and successful war on malicious software.' Reiman calls for an international organization to fight Internet crime. Last year Russia agreed to take down Allofmp3 after the United States intervened."
