Microsoft threatens its Most Valuable Professional[->] 2007-06-05 08:39 'Tractor' Barry

Submitted by 'Tractor' Barry on Tuesday June 05 2007, @08:39AM
'Tractor' Barry writes "(Shamelessly copied from El Reg as I'm lazy and it's a good preface...)

What's the best way to attract a pile of threatening lawyers' letters from Microsoft? Sell pirate copies of Windows? Write a DRM-busting program? Londoner Jamie Cansdale has just discovered a new approach. He had the temerity to make Redmond's software better. "As a hobby, Cansdale developed an add-on for Microsoft Visual Studio. TestDriven.NET allows unit test suites to be run directly from within the Microsoft IDE. Cansdale gave away this gadget on his website, and initially received the praises of Microsoft. In fact, Microsoft was so pleased with him, it gave him a Most Valuable Professionals (MVP) award, which it says it gives to "exceptional technical community leaders from around the world who voluntarily share their high quality, real world expertise with others". However, his cherished status did not last...""

Almost as many left in the pub

New research from SimplySwitch reveals that while we buy 18 million handsets ever year, we're throwing 855,000 of them down the toilet and leaving 810,000 in the pub - contributing to the 4.1 million we lose or break every year.

From the Duh! department:

Claiming it is essential that the President and Vice President be able to receive candid advice, the President and Vice President have directed the Secret Service to maintain the confidentiality of visitor entry and exit logs, declaring them to be presidential records and exempt from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

The administration is seeking dismissal of two lawsuits by a private group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, demanding Secret Service visitor logs.

Submitted by Rich on Monday April 30 2007, @01:47PM
Rich writes "A popular blogger on LiveJournal recently posted a hilarious but scary story about UPS' very real practices of sending uninformed drivers to people's doors with unmarked damage liability forms after packages are damaged or lost in transit. You sign this form, and you've just accepted responsibility for the loss. I work at a Geek Squad, and they've tried to do this to me at least twice. Another friend of mine was almost put out of business after he absentmindedly signed one of these and ended up having to pay for two of the same $10K item. This is ridiculous, considering that UPS' insurance deductible is tiny, and they're worth more than $45B. Anyway, here it is: UPS' Form of Mystery"
