Ballmer: Google and Yahoo aren't Netscape

Submitted by thefickler
thefickler writes "During a recent whirlwind visit to Australia, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer defended Microsoft's online strategy, saying that while there is some possibility that the Internet market could overheat, the current situation is very different to the dot.com bubble of the 1990s.

"I say that for a lot of reasons this is different to competing against Netscape ... the simplest one is that Google and Yahoo have real revenues. Netscape never did," he said.

With insight like that no wonder Ballmer's in the top job!"

Apple Mac OS X Update For 17 Vulnerabilities 259

Posted by Zonk
from the enjoy-a-less-wormy-apple dept.
BSDetector writes "Apple has released fixes for 17 OSX vulnerabilities, ranging from system takeover to denial-of-service attacks. It was the fifth security update released this year. It also marked the first time this year that an operating system security update from Apple did not patch a vulnerability disclosed by the January Month of Apple Bugs project. Today's update pushed Apple's year-to-date patch total to over 100. More than one of the affected flaws were called 'critical' or 'dangerous'."

What Is Your Favorite Writing Instrument?

Submitted by CWRUisTakingMyMoney
CWRUisTakingMyMoney writes "Knowing that Slashdotter-types are generally finicky about the tools they use day in and day out, are you equally picky about what you use for writing? What are your favorite writing instruments: ball-point pens? Felt-tip pens? Mechanical pencils? Hammer and chisel? Something else?"

Linux, what is all the fuss about?

Submitted by
guruevi
guruevi writes "Dell's got a neat infomercial for clueless people that don't know what Linux is and wonder what all the fuss is about featuring their choice of Linux, Ubuntu. The 4min movie goes over what Linux is (the free, stable, virus-free open source system that is owned by the world as they put it) and some of it's features like The Gimp, OpenOffice and Aptitude. If you know somebody you still have to convert to Linuxdom, please send them the following link: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/glob al/shared/corp/media/en/studio_dell?c=us&l=en&s=co rp&targetNetwork=1&targetChannel=1&targetMedia=v__ 296 Now if they got rid of the stupid background music..."

Geek Squad: Good work experience, or bad?

Submitted by
Denshuu
Denshuu writes "My goal is to eventually be granted a position as a network administrator, but as an uncertified Information Systems BS holder fresh out of college, I'll need time to earn work experience and certifications before being considered. I figured a good, or at least well-traveled, career-path would be to spend a year or two in a technical support position. The Best Buy / Geek Squad location nearby is hiring, but my fear is that its reputation as being the laughing stock of businesses in the PC world [UrbanDictionary] will make me a less attractive candidate for other businesses. Do employers give less consideration to potential hirees who have worked for Geek Squad due to its poor reputation (at least amongst anonymous netfolk)?"

Submitted by
ErikInterlude
ErikInterlude writes "First off, here's the link.

It's a slideshow demonstrating how an enterprising young lady acquired a stuffed beaver, hollowed it out, and placed all necessary parts inside to make it a computer. It's even got a DVD drive coming out of its belly!

I had no idea beavers were big enough to store all that hardware..."

NBA Star Claims Hard Drive Foul

Submitted by
Brandon Mumby
Brandon Mumby writes "An NBA star claims that a Texas company hired to repair his computer instead removed the machine's hard drive and sold the item — which contained confidential personal and financial information — to another customer. In a Bexar County District Court lawsuit, San Antonio Spurs forward Bruce Bowen seeks more than $2 million in damages from Computer Nerdz, the San Antonio company he and his wife hired last year to repair his Gateway computer. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/05 01071bowen1.html"
