jverkoey writes "Strips is a web comic reader with a solid pack of features, the killer one being push notifications. Imagine, instead of having to check a set of websites every single day, your phone buzzes the moment new content is available.
Strips is built upon a set of technologies including Amazon's S3 and Google's App Engine. All static content is replicated on the S3 tier, allowing Strips to scale without any impact to each web comic's servers. Google's App Engine is used to process the push notification data, and a completely separate set of computers is dedicated to crawling comics and sending out push notifications.
The big question is, won't the publishers be upset that their ads are being circumvented? Strips solves this problem by providing a targeted, mobile advertisement platform from which the publishers receive revenue and detailed anonymous analytics about reader count, time spent per day, and basic demographics. The ads shown in Strips are much more effective than the standard web browser advertisements thanks to their targeted nature, allowing web comic publishers to take full advantage of the iPhone platform.
