The road now leads onward
As far as can be
Winding lanes
And hedgerows in threes
By purple mountains
And round every bend
All roads lead to you
There is no journey's end.

Here is my heart and I give it to you
Take me with you across this land
These are my dreams, so simple and few
Dreams we hold in the palm of our hands

Deep in the winter
Amidst falling snow
High in the air
Where the bells they all toll
And now all around me
I feel you still here
Such is the journey
No mystery to fear.

Here is my heart and I give it to you
Take me with you across this land
These are my dreams, so simple and few
Dreams we hold in the palm of our hands

The road now leads onward
And I know not where
I feel in my heart
That you will be there
Whenever a storm comes
Whatever our fears
The journey goes on
As your love ever nears

Happy Mothers' Day! Now Go Buy Some Stamps.

(Those of you not in the US, this is your "Huh?" moment. :-) )

This is the last day to buy "forever" stamps for forty-one cents; tomorrow the rate increases by one cent. Increases will now be annual; the US Postal Service has been granted the authority to raise the rates once a year, as long as the increase is less than the rate of inflation. So get some stamps, so that you can send your mother a nice card next year, and save a penny in the process! :-)

For any persons of the maternal persuasion who happen to be reading, have a very nice day.

  • People still use those things?

A future grade-school essay on stamps

People used to use "stamps" to pay their bills with something called a "cheque" (or "check" in some parts of the world).

Or they'd send each other "letters", which sounds grossly inefficient - why send something a few letters at a time when you can send whole sentences and paragraphs ... I guess they read slower in those days, so a few letters at a time was okay ...

Or "holiday cards" for "Christmas". No digital pics, not even printer

    • Bought a book of 20 "forever" stamps a few weeks ago. And I still buy stuff mailorder with postal money orders, albeit I look up what I want on the web first. I'm sour on plastic, had too many instances of mess-ups with them. They can't cash and recash the same check or money order, but it seems a lot of the web based merchants have no problems dinning your accounts over and over again once they have your cc details, and I would rather just not bother fighting them all the time, so I just quit using plastic
      • You can "email" them money now. The way it works with my bank is that I set them up as a payee, complete with their email address, then I "pay" them. The bank sends them an email, and they can transfer the funds to their bank account when they access the email. This way, there are 2 banks involved the transaction, as well as the inability to "recycle" the transfer over and over.

    • While I'm still paying down my credit card debt, I still enjoy writing a check and stuffing an envelope and flicking it into the mailbox with a hearty "eff you!" It is much more satisfying than just clicking a "pay now" button.

Don't forget to make the last payment for $1.01 extra, so they have to keep sending you a statement of account each month ;-0

  • I have a nearly-full sheet of 37-cent stamps on my desk right now, with some 1- and 2-cent stamps to bring them up to current rates. That's how often I send stuff through the mail. :-)
    • I'm still working through a sheet of motorcycle stamps (39 cent), and I have a few 37 cent ones hanging around as well. Mostly the result of misplacing the folder that I keep stamps in, around Christmas last year. :-)

Yes, I write letters, but not that many.
