Submitted by jellomizer
jellomizer (103300) writes "Being this is a Christmas season, hunting for gifts. I am looking for a Kit, or at least the parts to make up a kit, for a Starter for Digital Electronics. The gift receiver has a little experience with chips mostly a Digital System Logic Engineering class in college. rigging up 74 series chips, for some basic functions, such as adders and the like. But is interested in making some custom electrics Like a Binary Clock, a simple USB D/A Converter. So what do slashdotters think what would make up a good starter kit, considerations such as chips that require compatible voltage, and are rather robust. Where we could find such parts and possible model numbers, and price willing to pay for them."

While I could write and publish a book, however I feel my experience is better suited in a series of essays, that is more fitted to be read on a magazine or a popular newspapers targeting Technical Leaders. But I have no experience on how to publish to such entities. Do I just write my essays and send them to a bunch of locations and see if they stick, or is there a better process?"

jellomizer (103300) writes "I am a manger of a small Software Development department, looking to hire some more developers. By edict of the CEO the search must be made globally. So we are dealing with different cultures and different ideas of truth and embellishments, etc... To try to counteract we give the potential employees tests where I watch what they do, to see if they actually know what they say they know. However it seems a lot of applicants drop out when mention that this test is mandatory. Is this a sign that we caught them in a lie, or are we weeding out good people where we shouldn't be? Would you be willing to take a test as part of the interview, if so is there any type of heads up you would like to know beforehand to make a decision to take the test easier?"

+ - How bad does Windows need to be for people to stop

Submitted by jellomizer
jellomizer (103300) writes "With still no seeming end to Windows Security problems, Current very bad reviews of poor performance on Vista, and all the other problems. Yet people still use it and most feel the effort to switch still isn't worth it. So how how much worse Windows will need to be to say get 40% of the current Windows users to switch to different OSs, Help fund development of their apps to more cross platform development models, Focus more on Web Application using open standards and less on platform particular add ins. It seems to me people will not switch off Windows unless it keeps on getting so much more worse then it is. So how bad does it need to be?"

In a word, no. I've seen the demonstrations on the Internet about how you can find another person using a Zune and give them a song they can play three times. It takes forever. By the time you've gone through all that, the girl's got up and left! You're much better off to take one of your earbuds out and put it in her ear. Then you're connected with about two feet of headphone cable.
