What a day. After double the normal commute time due to World Bank meetings near my office, I find out that one of the sites my company manages is the target of a Fark Photoshop. Oh, and that's not all. Most of the traffic is type-in traffic, not referred: CNN is carrying a story on their new "product" and didn't actually create the anchor. So people are typing the URL in.
But wait! CNNs story actually an AP Wire story that got picked up by a bunch of local outlets (little ones, like the WashingtonPost.com). Not content with that (cause I was actually going to have lunch today), Slashdot picks up the ball with an Index story. Bottom line, by 1:45P EDT, this little website that usually gets 7,000 visits a day was sustaining 800 hits per second and 80 Mbps of traffic.
We had this much traffic last year on a day when every Yahoo visitor got a banner on the main page - but we were expecting it that day. Not today. We weren't expecting this. But we were prepared: Thank heavens for Akamai.
This started as an "Ask Slashdot" question. Now I'm going to try and harness the power of a Fark ad too:
After years of working online I've collected a handful of "good" domain names that aren't in use but get traffic anyways. Last May, I signed up with a domain name parking service. They host a page with Google ads and I get PayPaled for click-through traffic. They claim US$0.03 to US$1.50 per click-through though I've only averaged four cents nad never seen more that seven. Not a bad way to earn (just a little more than) some beer money each month for doing absolutely nothing. Now I'm feeling greedy and I'd like to make more money with these domains. Any suggestions? Minimal effort is a plus. And, to make things interesting for you, I'll take the five best (Non-AC) suggestions and give the author their choice of a 1000-page Slashdot subscription or a Think Geek gift certificate.
The best domain name I have is "videoclip.com" and is currently parked with Sedo. If you have a good suggestion and would like 2 months of Total Fark (shudder the thought), I'll put that on the table too. I may even complete a Free iPod or Free Flat Screen offer for you.
