Diesel is now more expensive than regular gas in my country. Actually, premium gas is only 0.009€/litre more expensive than Diesel.

Not that it means that having a Diesel car is a disadvantage because, frankly, you still get a better mileage out of a Diesel car than a gas car.

  • #2 diesel fuel (summer - also used for home heating) contains 20% more energy than gasoline. Also, it's harder to cut back on diesel consumption - even if everyone stopped driving their cars tomorrow, look at all the tractor-trailers, farm and "yellow metal" heavy equipment, etc., that uses it.

Still, since the diesel engine has higher thermal efficiency, you're still good.

BTW - if your gas-powered car gets more than 30mpg, and you drive conservatively, you may notice you actually do get better mileage

    • diesel fuel (summer - also used for home heating) contains 20% more energy than gasoline.

I knew someone was going to point that out. I even hesitated writing it in the journal in order to avoid the comment. It's not as if I didn't know that. It explains why you get better mileage ;-)

As for heating in the winter: yeah, my parents heat on "heating oil" (which essentially is Diesel, but taxed differently) and they're not going to have fun bills with the next refill. Actually, last year was already bad en

  • The list you linked to is inaccurate. Actually, Diesel is at EUR 1,49+ in Allemagne, not at the stated 1,30. 95 oct was at 1,54, as was 98 oct, so Diesel is not *yet* more expensive, but will be soon. Oh, and stop rubbing it in. kthxbye. ;)

P.S.: Just today I read that all fuels are going to be around 1,80 per liter this summer. Of which then around 1,40 will be FUCKING TAXES MOTHER FUCKER GOD DAMN IT.

P.P.S.: You can now stop laughing. If you stay at 1,20 this summer you'll be STAMPEDE'd by German drivers bu
    • The list you linked to is inaccurate.

May be, I'm not responsible for what the ACL publishes However, my understanding is that these are the indicative prices set by the respective governments. Gas stations are free to ask more. At least that's how I understand it.

Oh, and stop rubbing it in. kthxbye. ;)

I'm not rubbing it in. It's just a topic I like to talk about. Don't worry... I'll soon pay as much as you. I'm actually *for* harmonization of gas prices over Europe. I'm paying with my taxes for th

  • Diesel's running about $4.39 / gallon whereas gas is about $3.89 (87 octane) $3.99 (89 octane) and $4.09 - $4.19 (91 - 93 octane).

I'm scared to see what 104 octane's gonna cost me this summer at the track.
    • I avoid using octane ratings simply because they have different meanings on our continents. That's why I differentiate in premium and regular. I didn't know, however, that you had three different ratings (Heck, even five! [wikipedia.org]). Of course, wikipedia to the rescue [wikipedia.org]. Aha, that explains it: I haven't seen 87 oct (91RON) in ages. I don't think they have it over here anymore. Okay, of course, I can't talk for the totality of Europe, so take my statements with a grain of salt. I have no idea why this is...

      104

      • 104 octane? We sometimes get 100RON in regular gas stations... I must assume it's the same.

Obvious brainfart, since the RON is usually +4 instead of -4, so 104oct would make it 108oct RON and I haven't seen that yet in regular gas stations.
