Who is Louise Boat? ->

Submitted by ianpm
ianpm writes "With Rupert Murdoch's News Corp crumbling around him, it was interesting to see Sky News (a Murdoch company) getting completely the wrong end of the stick about the attack on the Sun website last night.

It's not Louise Boat, it's pronounced Lulzsec."

LG Optimus 3D will convert 2D games and apps to 3D->

Submitted by ianpm
ianpm writes "The LG Optimus will be able to convert 2D games to 3D when it gets its Android 2.3 update. The Inquirer says that an LG insider let the info slip during a discussion about the phone. The question is, does anyone care about 3D either in a phone or in a cinema? Harry Potter receipts indicate the answer to that is a resounding NO!"

Mark Zuckerberg worried about privacy on Google+->

Submitted by ianpm
ianpm writes "Mark Zuckerberg has decided to leave Google's new social network because he "doesn't want to be tracked". Apparently, closing off your profile prevents you from being ranked in the list. It appears M-Zuck has kept his account.

In other news, the Internet's irony meter has just exploded.

Robert Scoble is now the most followed person on Google+ according to The Inquirer."

"Impossible" technology ->

Submitted by ianpm
ianpm writes "CNET UK has a feature about technology that's "Totally Impossible". In reality, it's all perfectly possible, but it's reasonable to say that all of it does at least boggle the mind slightly. Interesting to hear if Slashdotters have any better suggestions of implausible technology that's either possible, or on the verge of being so?"

The Pirate Bay's Plans To Encrypt the 'Net 297

Posted by timothy
from the pretty-ned8bdrnki(bdr## dept.
Keeper Of Keys writes "According to newteevee.com, The Pirate Bay, those fun- and freedom-loving Swedes, have embarked on a project to encrypt all internet traffic, probably by means of an OS-level wrapper around all network connections, which would fall back to an unencrypted connection when the other end is not similarly equipped. The move has been prompted by a recent change in Swedish law, allowing the authorities to snoop on network traffic. This will be a boon to filesharers and anyone else concerned about authorities and trade groups' recent moves towards 'policing' network traffic at the ISP level."

UK could finally get terrestrial HDTV

Submitted by SoLongAndThanks
SoLongAndThanks writes "When the UK opted to implement digital TV via terrestrial transmission the decision was taken not to allow HD, instead it went for increased channel choice in standard definition. Now OFCOM (the government off-shoot that allocates the spectrum) has indicated that it now wants to allow HD via the system (known as Freeview), but some changes will need to be made to make this possible. Cnet.co.uk has a story explaining the OFCOM proposal which includes moving some channels to MPEG-4 and changing the modulation scheme. It also mentions the BBC's MIMO trial which could be implemented at the same time to increase the amount of data carried per multiplex."

Five things that are wrong with the BBC iPlayer

Submitted by RoyalPotato
RoyalPotato writes "The BBC recently launched a public beta of its IPTV app, iPlayer. Cnet.co.uk has a list of five things it thinks are wrong with it, and while some are pretty obvious, like the undesirable presence of DRM, there are some interesting points about the P2P app, Kontiki, constantly 'seeding' with no user override and the lack of support for Linux and MacOS X."

Adblock plus users "accused" of stealing-> 1

Submitted by
derrida
derrida writes "There is this Firefox Add-on called Adblock plus that promises (and delivers) removal of "all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page". And there is also an ongoing debate whether this is stealing or not. Quoting two different views:
"Do you have a devise that automatically blocks all commercials on television.[?] There's a difference between ignoring commercials and blocking them." and
"My a** it is [stealing]! If your going to argue I'm taking something from you by not waiting for your ads to load, I'm going to argue you are "stealing" bandwidth.".
Going one step further some web developers released scripts that blocks Adblock (watch the oxynoron!).
How is really slashdot going to react if Adblock plus is heavily used by its readers?"
