+ - CERN rebuilding the world's first web site

Submitted by i_want_you_to_throw_
i_want_you_to_throw_ writes "Twenty years ago, a team of researchers shared the Web with the world. Now they want to show a generation that grew up online what it was like in its earliest days.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the date it released, for free, the technology and software needed to run a Web server.

In honor of the anniversary, a team has been assembled to recreate a working version of the first website, a how-to guide hosted by the project's creators."

The ATF doesn’t just want a huge database to reveal everything about you with a few keywords. It wants one that can find out who you know. According to a recent solicitation from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the bureau is looking to buy a "massive online data repository system" for its Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information (OSII)."

Comment: Here's a better idea: deregulate the mail (Score 2) 439

Why not? Fedex and UPS have perfected delivery of packages so why not the mail? I'm not sure what magic the USPS possesses that private industry couldn't do better anyway. Barring that, how about mail rates that make sense ? I live in Maryland and it doesn't make sense to me that I can send a piece of first class mail to New York City and Nome Alaska for the same price.

It never made sense that I could send a letter down the street or Nome Alaska for the same amount of money. Just seems like I shold be paying more. Otherwise why not just deregulate mail delivery? UPS, DHL and/or Fedex may be able to do it more efficiently.

The article, entitled "What Turned Jaron Lanier Against the Web" continues Lanier's rant against Web 2.0. It's a mostly interesting read with Lanier suggesting we are outsourcing ourselves into insignificant advertising-fodder and making an audacious connection between techno-utopianism, the rise of the machines and the Great Recession."

I hope the Pi is the Apple in this comparison. Orange Pi sounds disgusting.

Well try this!

Orange Pie
Ingredients:
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
3 egg yolks, beaten
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1 cup orange juice
3 egg whites
6 tablespoons white sugar
1 large orange, sliced in rounds

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (225 degrees C).
2. In a medium bowl, beat together egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar until mixture is thick and lemon-colored. Add flour, melted butter, grated orange rind, and orange juice. Mix thoroughly, then pour into pastry shell.
3. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake an additional 25 minutes, until custard is set.
4. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 6 tablespoons sugar, continuing to beat until whites form stiff peaks. Spread meringue over pie, covering completely. Return to oven for 10 minutes, until meringue is golden brown. Cool before serving. Garnish with orange slices.

Maybe a fellow Marylander can help me out with this: if we are truly a democracy, why can't there be a state referendum to either vote Yay or Nay on these cameras? Where I live in Montgomery County it seems like there are speed cameras every mile or so. Would it REALLY be that tough to just have them removed? Seems like a no brainer that you could definitely get the signatures to put it up for a vote.

If you spent that much time in financial institutions, the think about Urbana, Maryland. Banner Life has a data center there, as well as Fannie Mae, and the Social Security Administration is moving a data center there. It's pretty good bucks, but far enough outside the DC metro area to be at least reasonable. Just an idea.
