+ - FCC Cites Buttocks as Sexual Organ 7

Submitted by
rgriscom
rgriscom writes "The Federal Communications Commission is proposing to fine ABC $1.4 million for airing in 2003 between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. an NYPD Blue episode showing a woman's buttocks. The details are in this Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture. According to the FCC, the episode violated its decency regulations because it depicts "sexual or excretory organs or activities". In response to ABC's argument that the buttocks are not a sexual organ, the ruling states:

"Although ABC argues, without citing any authority, that the buttocks are not a sexual organ, we reject this argument, which runs counter to both case law and common sense.""

An anonymous reader writes "Amanda Kerik responded to a problem that a user was having with their Windows machine that since they had to do a re-install they might as well install Ubuntu Linux.

She got a message back from Yahoo claiming that such a comment was in violation of its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. It deleted her answer and warned her not to post anything like that again .."

+ - Extragalactic meteor observed over Russia-> 3

Submitted by
KentuckyFC
KentuckyFC writes "On 28 July 2006, Russian astronomers recorded the spectrum of a faint meteor as it burned up in the Earth's atmosphere (abstract on the physics arXiv). It soon became clear that this was no ordinary meteor. It hit the atmosphere at 300 kilometres per second, an order of magnitude faster than other meteors and faster than the Earth's velocity relative to anything else in the Milky Way. For this and other reasons, the astronomers conclude that the meteor must have come from beyond our galaxy."
