+ - "Inception" discussion->

Submitted by hey
hey (83763) writes "Obviously, the film "Inception" is a terrific summer sci-fi hit. But, beyond that it has some interesting themes for programmers. Without giving much away I'll just say: returning from a deeply nested stack of subroutine calls. I'd be interested to see what the Slashdot community has to say about it.
There will be SPOILERS in the comments... please don't click thru until you have seen the movie."

+ - Bilski - end of business method patents?

Submitted by hey
hey (83763) writes "the patent law community is closely watching one case in particular and speculating that federal judges could invalidate business method patents sometime this year. The case, generally known as re Bilski, involves a method for managing the risk of bad weather to crops by making hedged trades in the commodities markets. http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/05/new-patentable-idea-a-way-to-invalidate-vague-patents/index.html?ref=technology"

+ - Facebook crushes applications->

Submitted by hey
hey (83763) writes "When Facebook opened up their API, lots of people raced out to make applications. Me and others made apps to organize your fiends into groups — eg: cliques, circle of friends, groups (sorry links only work for logged in Facebook users) But now this week, Facebook added that functionality to the core friend page. Sounds much like monopolist Microsoft cutting off Netscape's air supply."
