IBM, LindenLabs integrate virtual worlds 2008-07-09 08:55 hal9000(jr)

Submitted by hal9000(jr) on Wednesday July 09, @08:55AM
hal9000(jr) writes "Informationweek has a story about IBM and LindenLabs working to integrate OpenSimulator and SecondLife. The extensions will be open sourced through the OpenSim project. This may make it possible to have one presence and roam multiple worlds. I remember way back in the 90's when there there were projects to integrate muds based on the LambdaMoo server. Initiated by the folks running the noe defunct ChibaMoo, integration never got too far other than being able to open start a connection between from ChibaMoo and a few others and receive messages between them. But as a professional MOO'er, it was a big leap."

Extended Validation still an exercise in futility 2007-11-24 23:47 hal9000(jr)

Submitted by hal9000(jr) on Saturday November 24 2007, @11:47PM
hal9000(jr) writes "Network Computing has a story about how extended validation certificates is a security theater but the Merchants Risk Council wants to promote it's use. Thing is, in January 2007, a joint paper by Stanford and Microsoft showed there that EV certs did nothing to reduce the risk of phishing by regular users. How can organizations continue to promote ineffective security methods?"

Charlotte's Web Site - New Hacking Contest 2007-02-17 17:00 ddonzal

Submitted by ddonzal on Saturday February 17 2007, @05:00PM
ddonzal writes "Ed Skoudis, SANS Instructor and host of The Ethical Hacker Network's Skillz Hacking Challenge has done it again. This time the theme is Charlotte's Web, and it's amazing. With subtle mentions of higher mathematics, this contest will have you knee deep in web hacking, crypto and steganography. Signed copies of Ed's book, Counter Hack Reloaded, and prestige in the security community are at stake. Good luck as these challenges have been known to zap corporate productivity! http://www.ethicalhacker.net/content/view/114/2/"
