The steel strikes flesh, a punishing blow
From battered bone, blood does flow
The body falls, it turns to dust
The steel is hidden, turns to rust

Again the war has come and gone
To sweep up all in death to mourn
But the fires of battle burn bright
Always to tempt the next fight

The heart of men burns brighter still
For death and destruction, there be no fill
To each we hide a secret shame
And cleanse ourselves in righteous blame

We point to kingdoms far away
And declare our hate and make them pay
For war costs much in treasures gone
My only daughter, my only son
