+ - Tinkerer Invents iPhone Interface for Ham Radios->

Submitted by jjp9999
jjp9999 (2180664) writes "By using the same technology found in older modems, Thomas Tumino, vice president of the Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club, has invented an iPhone interface for ham radios. He told The Epoch Times, 'Today there are iPhone apps where you can use the systems in the phone—and its sound card, which is being used as a modem ... And then you connect that into your radio with an interface like this, that just isolates the telephone from the radio, and then you can do all sorts of things.'"

+ - New Helmet Lets Typhoon Pilots Look Through Plane

Submitted by gilgsn
gilgsn (239700) writes "It looks like something out of Star Wars; it performs like something out of Star Wars, and for the fast-jet fighter pilots of the future; it could just make the difference between life and death. Welcome to the Eurofighter Typhoon’s latest weapon, not something slung under the wing, but a system with ‘brains’ that sits on the pilot’s head. The ‘Helmet Mounted Symbology System’ designed by BAE Systems, is a highly sophisticated helmet and support system that lets the pilot ‘see’ through the body of the aircraft, giving him a vital advantage when it comes to split-second decision-making."

+ - NASA-German SOFIA Observatory's First Flights.

Submitted by gilgsn
gilgsn (239700) writes "NASA‘s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA, completed the first of three science flights on Wednesday morning to demonstrate the aircraft’s potential to make discoveries about the infrared universe. The airborne observatory will allow researchers to better understand a wide range of astronomical phenomena including how stars and planets are born, how organic substances form in interstellar space, and how supermassive black holes feed and grow."

Hi, it is the right one... I added maxconnections to MySQL, but still having trouble... I am using a CDN, but there is a video on the page which I think is still pulled from the server, and I think that's what causing the overload. Last time I was slashdotted, that didn't happen... Sorry about that...

+ - Orion Spacecraft on the Path to Future Flight.

Submitted by gilgsn
gilgsn (239700) writes "Preparations for Orion’s first mission in 2013 are well under way as a Lockheed Martin-led crew begins lean assembly pathfinding operations for the spacecraft. The crew is conducting simulated manufacturing and assembly operations with a full-scale Orion mockup to verify the tools, processes and spacecraft integration procedures work as expected."

+ - Sikorsky beats helicopter speed record, again.

Submitted by gilgsn
gilgsn (239700) writes "250 knots might not seem a whole lot compared to any jet, but for a helicopter, it is truly incredible. Sikorsky today successfully achieved a speed of 250 knots true air speed in level flight with their X2 Technology demonstrator, and even pushed it to 260Kts in a shallow dive. Most commercial helicopters fly at half that speed."

+ - Taranis and Phantom Eye Unveiled Today.

Submitted by gilgsn
gilgsn (239700) writes "No, these are not super heroes, though "Taranis" is the Celtic god of thunder. The hydrogen-powered Phantom Eye unmanned airborne system, a demonstrator that will stay aloft at 65,000 feet for up to four days, was unveiled by Boeing today, while BAE Systems uncovered Taranis, a UAV that will test the possibility of developing the first ever autonomous stealthy Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) that would ultimately be capable of precisely striking targets at long range, even in another continent. The days of piloted aircraft are counted.."

+ - Another Promising Flying Car.->

Submitted by gilgsn
gilgsn (239700) writes "Flying cars seem to be all the rage these days, with the recent FAA approval of the Terrafugia as a Light Sport Aircraft. Past and present flying cars have looked a bit odd, resembling a cross between a VW bug and a Piper. Now, comes a new stylish model that will be offered as a kit. The Switchblade by Samson Motors looks pretty fast just standing there. Let's wait for the first flight later this year.."
