If this malicious software is already running it can easily do any of the following:
  • keylog the sudo password and install whatever it wants, or completely trash the system if sudo is setup as Ubuntu's default.
  • download a precompiled static version of the hackable software "which has a known security vulnerability to gain root access" and execute it.
