Dell plans servers based on Sun Solaris software

Submitted by Stony Stevenson
Stony Stevenson writes "In an effort to increase its market share in the free software community, Dell will now license Sun Microsystems's Solaris operating system and build server computers based on the Sun software. Details of the multiyear deal were announced by Michael Dell, founder and chief executive of Dell, and Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's CEO, at Oracle Corp's OracleWorld user conference in San Francisco.

From the article: "Dell's offering of Solaris redefines the market opportunity for both companies," Schwartz said in a statement. "The relationship gives Dell broader reach into the global free software community with Solaris and OpenSolaris, and gives Sun access to channels and customers across the volume marketplace.""

gr8gatzby writes "Sales of Mac OS X Leopard in Japan have exceeded those of Windows for the first time.

MacWorld reports on a report in Business Computer News that claims OS X sales shot up between September and October, climbing from a rate of 15.5 per cent year on year to 60.5 per cent.

However, at Microsoft, Windows sales fell from 75.3 per cent to 28.7 per cent.

In the six days after Leopard's 26 October launch, combined single-user licence (46 per cent) and family pack (7.9 per cent) sales accounted for 53.9 per cent of the total OS-only market in Japan.

The report attributes Microsoft's failing Vista sales to its overly-complex pricing scheme and Apple's commitment to faster product development."

TOP500 Computer Sites for 2007

Submitted by geaux
geaux writes "From the article: "The 30th edition of the TOP500 list was announced earlier today with the usual pomp and circumstance. Yes, I know, the TOP500 list is just a beauty contest. But even if these machines ran nothing but Linpack, they are still amazing feats of engineering. The latest rankings actually contained some surprising results, especially at the top of the list." The top system is just shy of a half petaflop!"
