OS X 10.1 and higher are clearly superior (IMO) to classic MacOS, but ... there are ten improvements I'd like to see before Apple hits us with another $$$ upgrade:
- Location Location Location (Manager):
Location Manager was NOT just for network settings. It managed startup items (you could invoke LM during bootup, either by default or with a hotkey), time zone, default printer, etc. Serious Mac road warriors miss LM badly. - Mt Rainier CD support:
Apple was right to ditch the floppy drive, but wrong to leave us without a replacement. DiscBurner isn't good enough; if you want to change a CD you have to erase the whole thing. Mt Rainier is mad crazy useful, it's innovative in the true Apple style, and it's an open standard. - Move Connect to Server... to
/Network:
What the hell is the point of /Network in the Finder if not to display available network items? The live server list logically belongs there, and would increase usability tremendously. - Move Print Center to
/Network:
Similarly, printers should be treated as files in the true Unix fashion. Want a Desktop Printer? Just drag an alias. Sadly, the Printers folder in Windows is more user-friendly than either Chooser or Print Center. - Stupid stupid Mount bugs :
If a server goes away before you manually unmount it: "Finder locked up, and even [force] quitting had no effect. Then the dock died. I finally wound up rebooting." Does this sound too familiar? - Stupid stupid Event bugs:
"There's a bug in 10.* which can cause process stalls during Apple Event activity; this bug should be fixed in a future OS update. That will resolve any problems which are specifically related to the Apple Event exchange between Dreamweaver and BBEdit."
Rich Siegel
Bare Bones Software, Inc. - Stupid stupid restrictions on GUI tweaking :
"for Apple to go out of its way--to actually expend developer effort--to stop these third party developers, while still failing to provide a supported alternative, is incredibly foolish."
John Siracusa
ars technica - Quartz should use PDF v1.4 :
DisplayPDF isn't bad, but it has known limitations. Imagine if OS X could natively edit PDFs the way MacDraw worked with good old PICTs. - Disk Utility should defrag:
As long as we use HFS, we need to rebuild the directories. I'm glad TechTool and DiskWarrior exist, but why isn't this in the OS already? - scanner and printer support:
OS X drivers for your old peripherals, anyone? Why do I have to buy VueScan (or a new scanner)? Also, adding Gimp-Print to the default install is a no-brainer.
