djan (121552) writes "Parango, the company that does Circuit City rebates was granted a patent that says in part "The present invention satisfies a need for a more consumer friendly method for processing rebates that maintains a breakage rate ..." "The rebate processing system provides a user friendly interface, yet retains hurdles sufficient to maintain breakage." Breakage is the word used for people that don't send in their receipts for rebates. The Consumerist has the details."
