French Train Sets World Rail Speed Record

Anonymous writes "In eastern France today, an Alstom TGV (TRAIN A GRANDE VITESSE) smashed the world rail speed record, by attaining a top speed of 574.8 km/h (357 mph). The previous record of 515.3 km/h (320 mph) was also held by a TGV, going back to 1990. Alstom hopes to boost sales following this €30 million staged event."

A speaker system made out of broken hard-drives

zeroburn writes "Afrotechmods has published an interesting mod on how to turn a series of hard drives into a speaker system. Their article features movies of the system in action, and promises that the quality of the audio is actually a lot better than what their camera captured. If you have some spare time (and hard drives!) you can build this yourself quickly. Its quality sure doesn't get close to a proper speaker system, but it's lack in fidelity is well compensated by its coolness factor!"
