I've personally been *demoted* for asking about funding continuous education!

My manager was OK with it, he even submitted the request to HR, who then submitted it to his boss for approval. His boss had an issue with it, and came to me and said, "If you think you need additional education, you're not as sharp as we need you to be." and then, since Texas is an at-will state (as in, they can fire you, at will, for any reason any time), I was summarily dismissed.

I'm sure this happens everywhere. I read your post as Insightful, not Funny. Your WHOOOSH was just disappointing.

I'm very sorry to hear your experience, and I live and work in Texas...

Texas has a continuous education requirement for the licensed professional engineer. So if you want to keep your license, you need to take certain amount of course/training each year. If your employer doesn't recognize the importance of that, then they are not aware of the state requirement for engineers as well as not understand the requirement to retain talent. In either case just be glad you don't work for that company anymore. Any legitimate firm who value engineers (at least to some levels) will take that as a good reason not to work for a previous employers.

Dude I want to applaud your motivation and novel idea. However I can also see that it is possible the conflict of interest and violating engineering ethics written all over the place, especially if the work you perform for the other company is the same or similar work you are doing for the company. Depending on the term of employment but it is pretty standard to waive all the work to your employer unless they give explicit approval.

If someone's in your front seat, they can see that traffic conditions have changed and know to STFU for a moment, without you having to tell them. Unless they're my ex, then they don't know what STFU means, nor how or when to do so.

I was gonna say you must not have a wife or gf riding with you before until I read the rest of your post. Point taken.

If it is an act of war against a foreign nation... what do you call it when several helicopters full of navy seals are sent into a foreign nation to kidnap or kill an individual who is living there with the implicit permission of the host nation, killing anyone who resists, taking the body of the target out... all without notice or permission of the host nation?

Do you really want to play a game of "lets pick and choose what we call an act of war"?

That's the choice of trade-off only a president can make. Choose to nab Osama with a huge risk of alienating another nation that's already pissed-off at us? Sure. Choose to send send a missile into a strategically important country not at war with? Not really worthwhile.

Remember this is suppose to be black-ops. None of this is suppose to be known to neither our friends nor enemies.

Ditto.

I bought a Nook Color before, mod it with cm7. Pre-ordered Fire, got it on release day also. I now use Fire far more often than using Nook Color. Once I get root access to Fire and install gmail app from google I will have little reason to use NC on a daily basis.

The integration on Fire is simply awesome. Yes I don't like the no-privacy mode while browsing but I'm sure it can be fixed. I got used to the location of the power button that it is not an issue at all. At least it doesn't annoys me.
