+ - Ask Slashdot: How do you get a job when you already have one? 4

Submitted by datavirtue
datavirtue (1104259) writes ""I've just entered the job market (this last month) and have been mostly using a popular tech job site with a smattering of CraigsList. I feel like I'm getting attacked! The question I pose is this: How do you deal with getting a job when you already have one? The recruiters literally ring my phone off the hook like a psycho girlfriend and I now spend more time on the phone, answering emails, and in interviews than I do actually working. My paid time off is starting to run out and people are getting suspicious, and I have just started looking! Please help, I need advice.
As a side note, I ran a job posting on CraigsList to get resumes and cover letters from other people looking for similar jobs and all I have gotten is almost a complete failure of applicants to submit cover letters--and the ones who did had a string of developer jobs where they lasted only a year or less. Is this the norm?""

+ - US District Court, "'Silly' Apple and Google"->

Submitted by
datavirtue
datavirtue writes "A recent article in the WSJ details how and why the Seventh US Circuit Court of Appeals gave the boot to both Apple and Google over patent infringement claims/counterclaims that Google "copied" iOS with Android.

There were great expectations when technology giants Apple and Google squared off in court, each accusing the other of violating its patents in competing mobile phones. No one expected this case would end in a whimper, with one of the country's most influential judges dismissing the claims as "silly." In the process, the judge, Richard Posner of the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, described a patent law system in "chaos" and needing basic reform.

This is one article you might want to read before commenting!"

+ - Advice on Logic Trainers and Prototyping Boards

Submitted by
datavirtue
datavirtue writes "Hi everyone! I'm studying electrical engineering and I'm in the market for a couple prototyping boards. I want to play with Xilinx processors, but I'm seeing other processors that I'm not familiar with. My main purpose is to get experience developing with systems that are used in the "real world" (so I can get a job), and Xilinx seems to be used extensively for embedded systems. I'm currently eyeing a RSR PLDT-3 with a XC95108, any advice? I need to keep the costs down too."
PHP

+ - Which web platform would you use? 5

Submitted by
datavirtue
datavirtue writes "I'm about to embark on developing active content (database driven, and web services) for the first time for my website and I have grown to love PHP. Knowing that there are other web development platforms available, and noticing some disdain for PHP in some circles, I'm curious to know which platforms slashdotters prefer along with the reasons why. Before I get started into heavy development I would like to get some opinions and more facts. Why shouldn't I use PHP?"

+ - Hijacking authenticated open wifi sessions->

Submitted by
datavirtue
datavirtue writes "Still in early testing, but I have successfully hijacked an authenticated user session on a managed Cisco wifi network by spoofing the MAC of an authenticated user. The MAC was easily obtainable by scanning with Cain, followed by a simple and well documented registry mod in Windows to change my MAC to that of the victim. Interested to see if anyone has a solution for this problem. Disclaimer: This was performed as a test on two of my laptops in the course of my job as a researcher."

+ - "Grey Market" Drugs->

Submitted by
datavirtue
datavirtue writes ""PBS just ran a story about "grey market" drugs that hospitals are forced to buy during supply crunches. These drugs are often sold at exorbitant prices (conservative choice of words) with questionable pedigree. Even though hospital pharmacies and doctors can't verify the origin of these transient drugs they often purchase and administer them any way--citing a dire need that overrules the requirements of safety and potency. In quoting one of the principals of the article: "We were in dire straights, so we still had to use it,"""

+ - HBGary Cancels RSA Conference Appearance->

Submitted by datavirtue
datavirtue (1104259) writes ""A group of aggressive hackers known as “Anonymous” illegally broke into computer systems and stole proprietary and confidential information from HBGary, Inc. This breach was in violation of federal and state laws, and stolen information was publicly released without our consent.

In addition to the data theft, HBGary individuals have received numerous threats of violence including threats at our tradeshow booth.

In an effort to protect our employees, customers and the RSA Conference community, HBGary has decided to remove our booth and cancel all talks.

HBGary is continuing to work intensely with law enforcement on this matter and hopes to bring those responsible to justice."

I wouldn't show my face either....I hear McDonalds is hiring."
