I've had a similar experience too and the result, although somewhat debatable, made a profound impact on my life. My wife and I struggled with infertility for years. She has a host of medical conditions that each could play a part in this infertility. One condition involved hyperthyroidism. After some research on the web, people with similar conditions claimed that using a medication to reduce thyroid levels to a certain range helped with infertility. The doctor we brought this up to disregarded our research and cited the acceptable range of thyroid hormone he learned about in medical school So we went back home and did some additional research. We found out that what is considered an acceptable range is debatable and recently that range was changed from a broad range to a much smaller one but this new range was not university accepted in the medical community. Back to the doctor we went (we live in a small town with only one endocrinologist available) and we discussed our findings again and demanded that he medicate my wife. He did and three months later she was pregnant.

In my doctor's defense, he was trying to avoid having my wife need this thyroid medication for the rest of her life. However, to us (her especially) it was worth the chance. Obviously, I'm all for people having access to information. It is our health, our body, our insurance money after all. If this is an inconvenience to doctors too bad, like it or not this is part of your job.

I imagine something like this transpired way back when the good people of Iceland were naming that volcano.

"What shall we call volcano number 7 sir?"
"What is wrong with volcano number 7?"
"You felt it needed a better name."
"Right, right. Of course. Double-o-seven has a nice ring to it."
"It does sir. Would that be two of the letter 'o' or two zeros?"
"There is a difference?"
"There is."
"Can we do away with that?"
"I think that may be outside the scope of this problem, sir."
"Fine, fine. What about... Eyjafjallajökull!"
"Is that a name sir?"
"No that was a sneeze."

The rest was just a big misunderstanding.

Don't be fooled by dictionaries either. Dictionaries record how words are USED (rightly or wrongly), not just what they mean. If people used 'bagel' to mean "stuff a cabbage in your ear on Tuesday", Webster would create an entry for it. Fucking descriptivists.

Let me get this straight... We should not believe a dictionary because their definitions are derived from the commonly believed meaning of the word. However we should believe you, some random /. clod who carries around a soapbox and an affinity for standing on it with no more credibility than your typical AC.

I'll assume the answer is yes.

So then, wouldn't it be safe to assume that the same idiots you are trying to win over to your side are the same idiots who got you up on the soapbox in the first place? If so, it is probably also safe to assume that those same idiots will follow the next wild-eyed slashdotter with a soapbox and a point who comes along.

Again, I'll assume the answer is yes.

In conclusion, I think you should just shut the hell up and go back to looking for porn. No one cares unless you have boobies, and even then, no one cares unless you are showing off those boobies. When you do finally show off those boobies, no one will be actually listening.

Good day to avoid cops. Crawl to work.
