A number of readers let us know that Reuters and others are reporting that Warner Brothers is canceling movie previews in Canadian theaters, starting with Oceans Thirteen. A Warner VP said, "Within the first week of a film's release, you can almost be certain that somewhere out there a Canadian copy will show up." Recently, the International Intellectual Property Association placed Canada on its Priority Watch List, along with the likes of Argentina, China, Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela. This community knows, thanks to Michael Geist, that the claim is mostly ficiton.

Remember those suffocating crowds and the completely non-game-related overload that eventually caused a restructuring at E3? If not, we certainly do, and you won't find us complaining about a more focused approach for 2007. Of course, toning down the antics inevitebly leads to less attendees, and such looks to be the case for the July convention in Santa Monica, CA. Reportedly, a paltry 32 companies are signed up to take part in this year's festivities (larger list after the jump), but big-timers such as Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Electronic Arts, and Square Enix (just to name a few) will still be making the hike. Still, going from some 400 exhibitors to less than 40 in a single year should make for a very different experience when July 11th rolls around, and considering that "only 3,000 to 4,000 invitations" will purportedly be sent out, getting a little hands-on time with an actual game will hopefully be less of a chore for the ones that get in.

  Verizon DSL 2007-02-23 14:34 jerseyjim

Submitted by jerseyjim on Friday February 23 2007, @02:34PM
jerseyjim writes "I'm baffled by Verizon's DSL and wonder if any Slashdotters have any suggestions. Verizon's DSL service has been intermitted for the last six months. Connects fine for a week or so and then it can't connect sometimes for days. I'm guessing Verizon has my computer polling for a dynamic IP address and I'm also guessing that it times out on my side when it doesn't get a response from Verizon. I'm also guessing it must be a wide spread problem because the recording at Verizon tech support tells you to reboot the computer and modem after waiting 15 seconds if you have connection problems. The Verizon tech has me checking wires, line filters, and resetting the default setting on the modem. I really don't think this is the problem since I'm speaking to the tech on the DSL line and early this morning spontaneously it reconnected without resetting anything and besides I've went through those steps countless times with other techs. Two weeks ago Verizon was sending a tech to my house. No one arrived. No phone call either. A follow up call by me said the problem was fixed at their end. Anyone have any insight into this?"

Unofficial Windows 2000 Daylight Saving Time Fix 2007-01-11 10:47 Saturn2003a

Submitted by Saturn2003a on Thursday January 11 2007, @10:47AM
Saturn2003a writes "Microsoft has stated that they will not be offering a patch for the new US Daylight Saving Time for Windows 2000 and earlier. Only customers with an extended support agreement can get a Hotfix from Microsoft. To get around this IntelliAdmin has created an unofficial patch (Source Code Provided) that will fix Daylight Saving Time on Windows 2000, and Windows NT machines"

Living the Good Life, Leaving Google Behind 2007-01-10 14:25 inetsee

Submitted by inetsee on Wednesday January 10 2007, @02:25PM
inetsee writes "A thousand people a day are sending their resumes in to Google, but according to the San Francisco Chronicle, 100 of Google's first 300 workers have left. These are the people who made a lot of money when Google went public, and they have the freedom to do pretty much what they want to. Some have decided to take it easy, but others have gone after new challenges. Google's chef is opening his own restaurant, Olana Khan has joined Kiva.org, a non-profit that makes micro-loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries, and Aydin Senkut has become an angel investor, looking to find (and fund) the next big thing. The article describes several other former Google employees and what they are doing now with the freedom that Google's success has given them."

  Bugged Canadian Coins 2007-01-10 12:18 tundra_man

Submitted by tundra_man on Wednesday January 10 2007, @12:18PM
tundra_man writes "CBC has an article posted about RFID type devices being found in Canadian coins found on US Contractors persons. From the article "Canadian coins containing tiny transmitters have mysteriously turned up in the pockets of at least three American contractors who visited Canada, says a branch of the U.S. Department of Defence". From the article "The report did not indicate what kinds of coins were involved" but I would say that the Canadian two dollar coin known as the "twonie" would be the best fit for the job as it has an inset component which could potentially be swapped for a high tech center."

prostoalex writes "Is it a good idea to go into Computer Science? Yes, there are certainly pending labor shortages as Indian companies outsource to the United States, but speakers of Stanford Computer Forum generally agree that it's a good career choice. From the article: 'To ensure job security, students must learn business, communication and interpersonal skills, Vardi recommended. The personal touch will become as important as technological expertise, he said. "There are jobs galore," agreed Suzanne Bigas, assistant director of the Stanford Computer Forum.'"
